Ratakunu (rat-ah-KOO-noo)
Northwest of Bukana lies the great landmass of Ratukunu. This continent holds many small nations and city-states that seem to be in a constant routine of uniting and warring with one another. Not long after the latest “great monarch” unifies several smaller polities, does that very nation then fall to uprisings or invasion from a neighbor. The current largest nation is the kingdom of Bhodan. This monarchy holds much of the southern coastline, so has dominated maritime trade for the last 150 years or so. It is a widely held belief both here and abroad that Bhodan is reaching its end, with signs of distress already showing.
The Vanara monkey-folk form militia-troupes throughout western Ratakunu. While many have integrated into other cultures, they continue to prepare for their eternal war with the Rakshasa fiends that serve their gods’ ancient foes. One of the most striking cultural practices of the southern nations is their reverence for the great feathered reptiles of that land. These “thunder beasts” are believed by the Bhodani to be the reincarnated souls of their most cherished ancestors. As such, they live in accord with these creatures going so far as to use them as transportation and beasts of war.
The tropical, lowlying topography of Ratakunu slowly rises in the north to become the tallest mountain range in the known world. The Kataki Mountains are very difficult to traverse. Somehow, verdant valleys and carved terraces manage to support dispersed communities and even small nations. Legends speak of isolated monks with wondrous powers and lush, magical forests filled with bizarre creatures and animal-human Amalgams hidden deep within the mountain range.
