Ryama

The noble, but insular empire of Ryama has fallen. For a millennium, the hubris of its emperors and samurai warrior-nobles inadvertently fulfilled an ancient and deadly prophecy. Agents of the infernal oni lord, known as the Obsidian Shogun, used the sins of those nobles to conduct a massive ritual. This fell rite culminated in the creation of a permanent portal to Jigoku, the realm of the dishonored dead. Hordes of demons and hellish ogres swarmed the nation. Realizing their error too late, the samurai could only sacrifice themselves to buy time for what few survivors could make it to evacuation ships. Now, the Ryami people are scattered and desperate. Some have found safe havens in Sanji and Bukana, but the majority are either living squalid lives aboard their vessels or have helped to build a bulwark of resistance in the Tonbo Islands. Once allies and brethren to the Ryami, the Dragonfly (Tonbo) Islands were cut off from neighbors when paranoia caused Ryama to close its borders fifty years ago. Now, they have welcomed their beleaguered kin and have begun fortifying against the inevitable expansion of the demonic forces that have already begun spreading out from Ryami Hellgate.
