Delirium Skewers

A ritual observed in Aela, Delirium Skewers are used during coming-of-age ceremonies of Rockdweller Orks. A few times in the past decades, Aela has allowed Wayfarer scribes to stay for an entire year. This has allowed them to observe Ork society in more detail. One of the things they reported is this ritual, employed by all Rockdweller settlements.   It's not exactly clear when exactly an Ork comes of age in Rockdweller society, but it seems to be variable and somewhere between age 16 and age 23. There appears to be little shaming of those that come of age late, while the youngest cases tend to be due to a youth seeking to assist an injured elder. At some point, both the youth and a group of adults will decide it is time for the youth's first Delirium Serpent hunt.

The Hunt
Delirium Serpents are always hunted with two hunting parties of a dozen hunters each. The youth will replace one hunter, who will act as their bodyguard during the hunt and jump in if needed. Sometimes multiple youths will participate in the same hunt, each replacing one of the hunters. If more than three youths are coming of age at the same time, they will be split over multiple hunts.   The first day of the hunt consists of traveling to a proper hunting ground and preparing all needed tools. On the second day, the hunters will attempt to hunt multiple serpents, with each youth separately participating in a single one. These hunts are primarily done with barbed arrows, meant to tire out the Beast through many injuries. Whips and clawbreakers are used if the Serpent attacks rather than flees.   After finishing the hunting, the dead Beasts will be prepared for transport. On the third day, the hunters will return with the hunt's spoils, immediately receiving treatment of any injuries.
The Celebration
The next three days after the hunt, the hunters will recover from the hunt while the youth is taught lessons based on what they had experienced. Meanwhile, the serpent meat is tenderized in its own venom. Other food and various drinks will also be prepared, for the large coming-of-age party.   On the second day of the party, the serpent meat will be served in the form of skewers. Any recovered arrows from the hunt are reused for these skewers. Some theorize this is to indicate a symbolic connection between the hunt and the party. Others suspect it simply is proper reusage of used materials.   Since the meat has tenderised for four days by then, while not being washed with milk afterwards, it causes a mild version of Delirium. Orks manage this about as well as Ogres, so the hangovers the next day are substantial. Treatment is withheld until after noon, as a final lesson to be careful with what one consumes. The final evening mostly involves lots of drinking, causing even more hangovers.
