The Great Devoid
Before the Great Purge legend holds that the great city of Trantalin was the the jewel of the world. Built with loving care by the Trolls of Kradow, now lost to the mists of time, and invested with their magic, it stood as the pinnacle of civilization and the envy of most Magelords. The city was one of the most stable places to live in the turbulence of the Age of Magic, full of people and knowledge.
When the Great Purge struck, Trantalin was wiped from the face of Fulkran in a horrific flash of unravelling magical energy. The detonation of all its magical wards, treasures, and magic users, perhaps the largest concentration of magic at the time, lasted for weeks. In the end, after the continuous rumbling blast abated, all that was left was a big hole on the ground. Rumored to actually be bottomless, it became known as the Great Devoid.
Centuries later, when the Second Breaking flooded the plains of Cirin, creating the Spelless Sea, the waters covered the Great Devoid. A huge whirlpool formed, sucking down endless quantities of the seawater. Popular belief holds that eventually the sea will be swallowed whole in the bottomless chasm and the land will be dry again. But in three centuries the level of the water has not dropped appreciably. More notably, passing ships consistently report a violent storm over the whirlpool of the Great Devoid on the same night every year and also that the whirlpool seems to be speeding up. Nobody so far has been able to determine the cause or the significance of these events.
