Session XXXIII: The Mines of Coliar Report

General Summary

Leaving Krato and Eloise to watch the bandits, the rest of the party explored the mine with Grewarum casting a spell to allow them to sneak more easily. After exploring some dead ends, they came across a few spiders and dispatched them quickly. Finding the elevator down the mining shaft broken, Dalvanak floated down to the bottom and Darius expertly climbed down the to help Garlith repair the winch with lengths of rope. After some difficulty, the party fixed the elevator and descended.
The party found a group of rust monsters chewing on iron ore deposits. Exploring further, they found a note that the erstwhile foreman of the mine left for her mother. "They’ve come from below the earth, and we cannot beat them back, but I will not yield this mine to anyone—it is ours by right! I pray that Mother finds the deed before an outsider. I’ve hidden the halves in two different places. Mother, please find them. I trust you’ll know where to look. Under sleep and under dreams. Your daughter, Thidrubelle." The party begins to search for the halves of the deed.
Darius and Garlith find a strange pool that seems to ripple and something glinting underneath the surface. While they stand there, the tentacles of an otyugh shoot out and the monster rises from the water to attack them. Dalvanak uses his mental powers to convince the otyugh that rust monsters are delicious. The otyugh then fished out a trunk that had hit it in the head and wanted it destroyed. Inside was a waterproof pouch that contained half the deed to the mine. The otyugh proceeded to trundle off to eat some of the rust monsters. Grewarum kept looking for the deed while the rest of the party assisted the otyugh as it was swarmed by rust monsters. After a fierce battle, the party was successful in keeping the otyugh alive and defeating the rust monsters, clearing a good portion of them from the mine.
Grewarum was able to use the chaos to explore further, finding the hole where the rust monster were entering. Above the hole is a system of scaffolding holding up a potential cave in. It is evident that allowing the cave in to happen would fill the hole. The rest of the party band with the otyugh to take down the rust monster with Dalvanak stunning some of the remaining monster and the otyugh with a psionic blast.
