The Beggar King
Rising from the gutters of Dragonrock, there is a hero of the downtrodden. When the oligarchic nature of the political system leaves people behind, there is one who comes to clean up. Sometimes literally. He is the Beggar King. Thought to be a noble in disguise, the Beggar King runs a semi-criminal organization called the Guild of Beggars. His exploits are legendary and frequently has him pitted against the Gorchakov family's low brow dealings with the poor and dispossessed.
Summary
Some say he is a changeling. Others say he is a collection of people with a shared identity. None truly know say Gribbitt, the lawyer for the informal guild of beggars.
Despite the mystery surrounding the Beggar King, his reputation is widely known throughout the city. He is known for his acts of vigilante justice, which often involve punishing those who exploit or mistreat the poor and downtrodden. The Guild of Beggars is said to operate as a sort of underground network, with the Beggar King as its leader.
The Beggar King is known for his tireless efforts to protect the poor and vulnerable on Dragonrock from the machinations of the Pakhan. He is said to have an extensive network of informants and allies among the beggars, thieves, and other marginalized members of society.
Whenever the Pakhan tries to commit extortion or intimidation of the poor, the Beggar King and his Guild of Beggars are quick to respond. They use their knowledge of the city's back alleys and hidden corners to track down the Gorchakov thugs and beat them at their own game.
In some cases, the Beggar King has even orchestrated elaborate schemes to undermine the Pakhan's power. For example, he might plant false information or evidence to make the Boyars think that the Pakhan is planning an attack on them, or he might engineer a fake assassination attempt to make the Pakhan look weak and vulnerable.
Historical Basis
Around 1392 DR, there was an assassination attempt on Count Gregori Alexandrovich Gorchakov. The assassin was described as a man covered in rags. Ever since the Cassetti Scandal of 1395 DR, the association of the Gorchakovs and organized crime stuck. It is likely that the same ragged man trying to defeat someone that the public considered to be a symbol of tyranny to the poor invented this vigilante's appearance.
Date of Setting
Circa 1390s DR
