Cult of the Endless One

When the bombs fell, Zheng Corp, a Chinese bioscience megacorporation, went underground. Their 43rd CEO was currently in charge when this happened. Pre-war media refers to him as charismatic and lofty-minded; however, all records of his actual name have somehow been removed from every database. This man was determined not to meet his end in the bunker and, although he had to use an extraordinary amount of resources to do so, he began looking for ways to move his consciousness into a new body. He worked for decades until he was nothing but a frail old man who could barely life a wrench; but nonetheless he persisted and eventually succeeded. He made a new body out of synthetic organs grown by Zheng Corp, even printing the skeleton out of calcium. Over the next several centuries, he not only left the company and became obsessed with cheating death, but he also began to push the limits of the bodies he could create and inhabit.   At first, he would wait until these homunculi became worn down before switching to a new one, but once he had a decent stockpile of bodies with different properties to try out, he began switching at will. He quickly noticed that removing himself from a body while it was still alive resulted in it generated a consciousness of its own. He called these new beings Castoffs. Intrigued, he made a vast multitude of them, telling them they could call him Endless. Most of the Castoffs worshiped him, forming the earliest iteration of the Cult of the Endless One. Eventually this cult of personality spread to include the common folk who admired the sheer scientific and magical prowess that Endless had accumulated at this point. However after several decades, he lost interest, like mankind so often does, leaving his flock to their own devices while he traveled the world.   Nowadays, the Endless Man feels more like an urban legend than a fact, though there are many who remember him, or at least one of his faces, still alive today. Stories of strange people drift on the wind, teasing at his movements; but being able to switch bodies at will makes someone borderline impossible to find. Despite this, the Cult of the Endless One spends almost all of their time doing exactly that. Wayward sheep searching in the dark for their shepherd. Sadly, they often find themselves cleaning up after him as they follow his trail. The Endless Man considers himself more important than others and acts accordingly. Some members of the flock rationalize this by saying he is a god and can do what he wants, while others grow more and more bothered by his behavior and want to ask him about his motives theirselves. Whatever the case, the Cult of the Endless One follows in the wake of Endless, the Infinite Man.   The majority of the cult pursues works of artifice like their master, taking to the streets and holding demonstrations of old-world devices and visitant artifacts from beyond. Who knows? Maybe that beggar watching from the back or that guard staring intently was the Endless Man himself and maybe what they saw was exactly what they needed to come back! It's a fleeting hope, but one that drives the daily outreach of the cult all year around.
