Memorialism

Memorialists are those who have awoken to the truth: they have already died and this is the afterlife. To some sects of this religion, the blood and toil of daily life feels much more like penitence for a life of sin from this angle. Other sects see their bleak surrounding and are filled with rage that they are in a hellish purgatory that they don't deserve. Depending on how a group of Memorialists reacts to this revelation and others, they can be peaceful hippies or raging berserkers. This religion's reliance on personal revelation is a big part of why there is such an extreme difference in outlooks from sect to sect.   The peaceful memorialists often wish to spread this awakening amongst others, in contrast to the angry ones who care nothing for what happens to the rest of this world between worlds. As a result, the peaceful message of self improvement and penitence for a past life of sin has spread much farther than any hateful outlook. To these ascetic memorialists, the process they must go through in this afterlife in order to atone for the sins they committed in life is threefold:
  • Awaken everyone you can to the reality of the world. Everyone is living in this afterlife together, and it is by no mistake that anyone is here. It is good and just to allow your fellow person the same chance at finding redemption that you're on right now.
  • Live in repentance until the day comes where you journey beyond this world and reap the rewards you have sewn. Although everyone's idea of what is worthy of repentance can vary, it is incumbent on you to do your best, for a higher power watches your actions.
  • You have until you leave this world to find your crux, that is, the the reason you ended up in this afterlife. This requires years of deep introspective thought and forces a person to confront their flaws and genuinely make themselves a better person. For example, someone who struggles with alcohol might consider addiction their crux and spend their life living apart from it.
