King's Guard
The formal bodyguards to the king of any nation. In Chereladi, these guards wear a specific dress uniform known as the King's Blues.
Composition
Manpower
Most nations limit the king's personal guard to 20 individuals, allowing them to rotate in teams of two.
Equipment
All guards carry a longsword in a back sheath and a long dagger at the hip. Uniform armor includes a chain shirt worn under the King's Blue tabbard, tall boots with knee-length greaves and jointed gauntlets which cover from knuckle to elbow. Additional equipment includes a light crossbow, which is frequently worn at the hip.
Vehicles
All guards are expected to own a horse or have use of a horse from the castle stables and possess average to above-average horsemanship.
Logistics
Recruitment
The King's Guard usually recruits from recently knighted individuals. This usually means the king himself has assessed a candidate and deems him both trustworthy and capable of the requirements of service. In Chereladi, the king usually knows all his personal guards by name. Fifteen of King Geoffrey's personal guards were knighted by him personally and appointed to his guard. The remaining five were older holdovers from his father, King Geruff's personal guard.
History
The first King's Guard unit recorded belonged to Queen Ashton Hadleigh and was established when she was crowned queen in 464. Queen Ashton felt that she required a personal guard she knew she could trust with her life after her marriage to Sir Lucas Greenknight, a commoner. The end of her father's reign has been full of upheaval and her decision to marry a commoner was tainted with rumors of a Blood Mage who may or may not have granted him powers.
