Provost
A Provost is the head of a community council. In Westlo, only Duntown and, formerly, Hollymargret were large enough towns to have a Provost.
The current Provost of Duntown is Provost Marie Goldweather, a long-time City Council member who is nearing retirement. She, perhaps more than any previous holder of the title, enjoys the ceremonial aspects of the job. Her election as Provost has allowed her seat as the Councillor for Dendrah to be taken by Pater Nay Loth, High Priest of the Temple of Dendrah - Duntown
Appointment
Provosts are elected for eight years at a time by the councillors, and although one does not have to be a councillor to become Provost, it is rare that one is elected from outside the group. One such exception to that norm is the famous last Provost of Hollymargret, Cron Sabato. Provost Sabato was one of the humanfolk to settle his family in the great city of the Orcs and Elves. Among the humanfolk, he is blamed for allowing the city to be destroyed, while the orcs and elves celebrate him as the Last Good Human.
Duties
In Duntown, the role of Provost has ceased to become an important decision-making role, but it is still ceremonially important. While the real power is in the hands of the City Council as a whole, and each Council's Constable on a local level, the Provost is expected to rubber-stamp all new decrees and be available for important occasions, such as unveilings. The Provost also has the power to form agencies, sub-committees and quangos, but no one has to listen to them.
