The Wilds
The Wilds is a forest and series of small hills found to the west of Livey and to the south of the western end of the Collyner Mountains.
For some, the very existence of the Wilds is a nuisance, since it forbids the development of a decent road to Collyner Mountains and the rich, civilised lands beyond. To others, the woods and land of the Wilds are sacred, to be kept pristine and unspoiled at all costs. At present, a fragile middle ground holds sway, with traditional foraging, coppicing and rabbit hunting permitted. Tree felling on any scale or the hunting of any other animal is strictly forbidden.
Fauna & Flora
The trees of the Wilds are mostly deciduous and some are extremely ancient, mixed in with coniferous trees and several species of sprawling thorns. There is a path that avoids the most tangled of thickets, but it becomes more difficult to follow the deeper one goes into the woods. You will easily find wild garlic, nettles and berries in their due season.
The hilly areas are covered in long grasses. Large rabbits and some wild sheep can be also found in these areas, together with a strange, stocky breed of pony that appears to be indigenous to the area. Older rural folk of the region will tell you that the hill ponies of the Wilds are not to be approached, and some will show an extreme reticence to even discuss them, but they are completely harmless and can be easily tamed. The rabbits are good eating and easily hunted.
Tourism
The following is an excerpt from the Trapadvisor Guide to Westlo.
Aptly named, the Wilds are a delightful way to enjoy the very best of nature while remaining within easy reach of a warm bed and good food. The early riser, waking in Livey, will find one day sufficient to experience the Wilds and its flora and fauna and return in time for a hearty meal at the Paraffin Lamp.
Any hardier expeditions seeking an overnight stay (or even two!) in the Wilds should avail themselves of the services of a ranger or experienced guide. Tan Peart, the Holy of Livey's Temple of Dendrah keeps a list of local rangers of trustworthy alignment.
