The Kingdom of the Westfold
Structure
The kingdom is led by a King, with Dukes and Counts serving under him. However, the power of the monarch is not absolute, as the high and low nobility convenes in a high council, serving as a check on the power of the king.
History
The Westfold is one of the oldest kingdoms of men in Westoria. They can trace back their lineage to one of the followers of "The Pathfinder". A man who served as his steward, and took control of the city after his death. However, despite this privileged position, the Westfold was only one of the many petty kingdoms of the age. Still, it quickly became apparent that they were the first among their peers, as the age of petty kings would end with the Westfold consolidating the westerlands under their rule.
During the third age, despite the relative external peace of the period, the Westfold saw an unfortunate succession of weak and feeble kings, some of them even cruel and mad. This, coupled with a civil war led by House Lys, would make this period known as the Crisis of the Third Age, as many of those alive at the time thought the kingdom would come to an end. However, after a series of victories against the rebels, a compromise would be reached in the form of the High Council. A body of lords that would serve as a check on the power of the king. And although at first was almost just nominal, the body would go on to acquire more and more power.
Demography and Population
The Westfold, with its fertile lands and rich hills, is one of the most populous kingdoms in Westoria. This is specifically true of the south, which has some of the best lands and enjoys the protection that the capital provides.
The north of the kingdom, although not as rich, still enjoys a level of wealth superior to must regions. And unlike the south, which is populated solely by Men, the north is quite diverse, as the Riverfolk, Barlish, and Men, all live together in the north of the westerlands.
Military
The Westfold military might is regarded with awe across all of Westoria. And although it still heavily relies on levies for the bulk of its army, just like the other kingdoms, the cavalry tradition among the noble houses makes their knights a dreadful thing to encounter.
The king also has at his disposal a regiment of bodyguards. All of which come from a tribe from the Great Wild that was once crushed by a Westfold king.
And when it comes to incursions from the Wildlands, the Westfold has at its disposal another source of power for their military. That comes in the shape of the 24 Warden Houses, who man the 24 frontier castles. Their life pledged to meet any
