The Lock And Key
The Lock and Key: What Moli knows about the Lock and Key is little more than myth and rumour. The sort of thing halflings whisper to each other on dark nights when safe in their beds with their brothers and sisters feeling safe and warm and confident to talk of such things.
The Lock and Key is about the only building worth talking about in Vermin Alley. Everything else is run down and sagging into the street and so it stands out as the only building that seems to be well-maintained and the rumours focus on the reason why as much as anything. It is said that the tavern is used as a meeting place for those who need to discuss business that is best kept low-profile and so Vermin Alley where no decent person would willing go is the perfect spot.
Who these characters are and why they value their privacy is something that varies with the telling. Rat Catchers, Gong Farmers, and Gravediggers, are often promoted to Grave Robbers, Rat Worshippers, and Plague Spreaders in the stories told and some even talk of cannibal feasts and blood-sucking monsters lodging at the tavern.
But they are probably just stories aren't they?
Vermin Alley and the Lock and Key often gets mentioned in plays and ballads as places of infamy where wastrels gather and nasty plots are planned. They are the stuff of horror stories and conspiracy theories.
It is probably safe to say that 'The Lock and Quay' lodging house on Luitpoldstrasse is probably a deliberate pun intended to play on the notoriety of 'The Lock and Key' in Vermin Alley and its frequent publicity in plays and ballads.
