Whilst researching the dark arts in his fathers study Kemmler discovers a secret drawer in his father's desk in which are hidden some poorly translated copies of the Books of Nagash. The Books of Nagash contain the accumulated wisdom of the Great Necromancer Nagash who brought about the downfall of the Tomb Kings' human civilization and who recorded his vast knowledge of dark magic in nine books.   The original books are scattered across the old world and are either lost or in the possession of remote factions or powerful necromancers. The books Kemmler discovered were mere copies, incomplete and hurriedly translated. Nevertheless, the information they contained was enough to grant Kemmler the time he needed to complete his research and a tantalising opportunity to gain immense power and a chance of immortality.
