Refuge's Floodgate Operator

Thanks to one of its founders and their knowledge about spirits, The Refuge, one of the last settlements hidden in the sewers, is completely protected against anything of spiritual nature. But while Spirits, Lords, and possessed cannot enter there, nothing stops them from throwing anything through the protective wards, collapsing the ceiling or sending there their servants/puppets. As such, keeping The Refuge as secret as possible is one of the highest priorities for the survival of its citizens.   The sewers around the settlement form a maze of tunnels that were used to drain the overflow of the water above. The settlement itself is located inside one of the cisterns the drained water would normally flow towards. Said cistern doesn't currently fulfill its purpose thanks to the system of floodgates that redirect the water to other cisterns.   Those floodgates, and their operators, serve also as one of the last lines of keeping the secrecy of the village.

Operators

Those chosen for or picking the role of floodgate operators spend most of their days outside of the settlement, in areas that are more dangerous. While The Refuge desperately needs more of them, right now there's only one team of 5 people serving as operators. 4 often work in pairs in a 2-shift system, with the last one being a mechanic who also can operate the floodgates manually, should the need arise. The two pairs consist of the system panel operator that moves all of the floodgates and the monitor operator who manages cameras and motion detectors placed in many locations in the sewer.

Hazards

Because they are away from the settlement, there's a higher chance that operators will be found by possible threats, especially if the intruder notices the floodgates move. And while the floodgates can stop a lot of material threats, they are ineffective against incorporeal beings and the ones possessing highly destructive abilities. In case of a breach, it is the operator's role to lure away the threat while activating the final, heaviest floodgate that has been prepared to completely seal away the entrance to The Refuge and blend in with the walls around it, making it all look like a solid wall.

Obtaining the rank

To become a floodgate operator one needs to volunteer to be one. In the past, there were dire situations, either when a previous operator died or made some stupid mistake. With not enough volunteers, the inhabitants of the settlement had to vote on who would be a member of the group.

Responsibilities

Whenever they notice a possible danger incoming, it is the operator's job to move floodgates discreetly enough to redirect possible threats away from the settlement.
