Barren Dominion Geographic Location in Wilde Blue | World Anvil

Barren Dominion

The closest thing to a desert in the Blue

Listen up! Our next rotation is going to be through the Barren Dominion. Keep your eyes peeled, men, because at some point during the next month, one of those blasted specks of dust and dirt is going to have an smuggler, terrorist, deserter, or other such criminal trying to hide on it!
— Sparax Protacius, Imperial Captain, to the crew of the Sanguine Blade
The most inhospitable place in the Blue that people still live in, the Barren Dominion is mostly home to people who will not simply be told "no". The islands can barely support plant life, let alone farms, the air is thin, and any minerals available have been stripped away a long time ago. Aside from Boreana, the only reason anyone would go into the Barren Dominion is because they either have no place else to run or they are hunting the previous group of people.

Geographic Features

For the most part, the islands of the Barren Dominion most closely represent those of the Shattered Worlds, though much larger. Islands are craggy, with steep cliffs and rocky hills. The occasional mounatin appears to break up the monotony, but even those are filled with sharp edges and harsh shapes.

Flora and Fauna

Very little flora can survive in the Barren Dominion, with the hardy Iperor bush being the most common. As such, few animals and insects make their homes in the Barren Dominion, though very rarely you can find Selxus nests. Those large birds are capable of roaming great distances to find food, and prefer the privacy that the Barren Dominion provides, but it is a struggle for even them to thrive in such a desolate place.

Natural Resources

The only real resource that the Barren Dominion provides is stable land. The islands do not have a high concentration of metals like can be found further south, nor is the soil fertile, but there are places where the large landmasses can be used for other purposes, like on Boreana where the Empire runs large water-collection rigs.

Notable Locations

Boreana

The largest island in the Barren Dominion, and yet the least fertile, Boreana supports a large population who mostly run water-collection rigs that gather moisture from the clouds that form over the island.
Population: 4,470
Controlled by: The Empire
Owner: The Putrace Family

Corcyra

One of the oldest colonies in the Barren Dominion, Corcyra was settled because the central mountain was suspected to contain valuable metals. As it was settled before the advent of earthblood mining techniques, it took almost four decades to realize that this assumption was incorrect. Not wanting to simply abandon the colony, the Empire turned it into a small slave colony, which it has remained since.
Population: TBD
Controlled by: The Empire
Owner: TBD

Portus Naois

A large slave colony for the Empire, Portus Naois is also a large trading port between The Trade Union and the Empire, as well as being a primary point of entry for smugglers and the like.
Population: TBD
Controlled by: The Empire
Owner: TBD

Nokte

The home base of the Midnight Oathbreakers, a pirate organization. Nokte is acutally built into the underside of the island, making it easily overlooked unless you know where it is. This does not stop fairly regular raids by both the Empire's Navy and several of The Trade Union's clans.
Population: TBD
Controlled by: Midnight Oathbreakers
Owners: Midnight Pirates

Scarwe

A ruin of a colony, abandoned since the Glesseal-Imperial War. Scarwe was once the home of worship for Cobal, God of Change, the patron of the Shiftblood, but it was abandoned after the destruction of Luceria.
Population: 0
Controlled by: Unclaimed
Owner: None

Luceria

A ruin of a colony that was destroyed during the Glesseal-Imperial War. Imperial history books no longer even record Luceria as having been settled, in an attempt to erase some of the massacres they had committed during the Glesseal-Imperial war from the minds of their citizens.
Population: 0
Controlled by: Unclaimed
Owner: None

Lutonia

An abandoned settlement, founded not by the Empire or even the Trade Union but runaway slaves and deserters. It existed in secret for some time, before being discovered during the closing years of the Glesseal-Imperial war. When the Empire attempted to conquer them, the navy assigned and all of the citizens vanished. This curious event spawned many ghost stories of the region, including the popular fiction book Lutonia Lost.
Population: 0
Controlled by: Unclaimed
Owner: None
