Even minor procedures, that is to say, procedures done for relatively non life-threatening illnesses and maladies, can have a not insignificat risk of Reliquation, especially if you work in a high-sorcerous environment like a factory or foundry. Something as small as repairing or replacing a mangled finger could raise the individual's chances of Reliquation by 20%.— Faedra Ceth, Lightblood Surgeon
Currently only available in the Academies, this new technology was developed to prevent aging. It failed at that purpose, but an Academic working on it discovered that it had drastically accellerated his natural rate of healing, specifically for a scrape he had on his knee. After shifting focus, the Diffuser was able to boost the natural rate of healing by upwards of 20 times, without requiring direction from a Lightblooded Doctor.
Lightblood Healing
Ever since Lightbloods were discovered in the mid-Sorcerous Age, they have been used as healers and doctors. However, much of this healing was overzealous and crude, which eventually resulted in patients developing
Reliquation. Even if the Doctor or Surgeon was skilled at directing their magic, Lightblood magic still most commonly works by simply replacing the damaged pieces with pristine ones. The Academy suspects that such a drastic change is worse on the body, in terms of magical resilience, than other, less invasive methods, but those are much harder and more time consuming for the doctors. The Diffuser offers an alternative: a small dosage of magic, spread out over the whole of a room, able to speed up natural healing immensely without using magic to outright fix whatever is broken.
Preventing Reliquation
Too little time has passed since this device's invention to be sure, but there is hope that this will reduce the amount of Reliquation caused by Lightblood magic, as the actual healing done is still mostly achieved through natural means, just sped up through magic. Preliminary studies do seem promising, as well as the reports that the
Academy has published, but until they are certain they are keeping this technology proprietary.
This is a great idea! But have the Academics considered the idea of using a diffuser to allow undersea exploration via breathing underwater with a container of air? And then I can think of a more dire idea... assassination through diffuser. Still, nice! I like it!
Thanks! They have not, as the Academics are pretty single-minded about most of their projects. I might have to include those ideas in the off-brand versions that others eventually develop, though :)
