At the start of the Trade Union Revolutionary War, new advancements in technology allowed for absolutely massive warships to roam the skies. These dreadnaughts were thought to be unsinkable, and both sides had several dozen that they brought to bear in the early battles of the war. By the end of the third decade of the war, that myth had been disproven, and only one dreadnaught remained: the Imperial Dreadnaught Invictus.

The Last Dreadnaught

The Invictus had stayed afloat until this point due to two things. Firstly, the skill of its captain, Therapont Sentisund, a prodigy of naval battle. Secondly, the fact that they Empire had managed to scavenge some partially-sunken dreadnaughts that had resurfaced from the Depths. The Trade Union had no dreadnaughts left, and the Invictus was more than a match for any of the ships that Sayles was producing. Still, it alone was not enough to win the war, and the leadership of the Imperial Navy did not want to risk the Invictus in fights that posed any risk to the citadel-sized warship.

Invictus' Last Battle

Just before the war ended, the Trade Union captured Boreana. Without the water it supplies Ilysium, the city's stockpiles would quickly run dry, and the Empire would be forced to surrender in a matter of days. And so the Invictus, along with a sizable fleet of later-model warships, was sent to Boreana. It did not return. The Empire surrended two days later.

Starlight Messaging

In order to communicate across long distances, skyships use a powerful light mounted atop their ship. This light is pulsed in short or long intervals to convey a message to nearby skyships. There are several problems with this, largely that it is difficult to use during the day, which has kept it from being a commonly-used form of communication. However, it is still useful for displaying warnings or requests for help.
