Wandering Stars

Stellar Oddities

If you're ever adrift without a compass, make sure you double check the stars. Pick the wrong one to follow, and you'll be lost to the winds forever.
— Old pilot's wisdom
These strange mysteries of the Blue have perplexed those who turn their gaze skywards for generations. They refuse to match with modern understanding of the stars, and are incredibly tricky to track and categorize.

Appearance

Wandering stars do not initially appear to be very different from most other stars in the sky. They are pinpricks of light against the darkness of night, and in the cities they are easily obscured by the streetlights. Wandering stars can be any color, though they mostly seem to all be of a similar brightness, unlike the more stationary stars.

Wandering

All stars of the Blue move, but for most, their movements are regular and predictable. They never change in relation to each other, and have a set path across the sky for each day of the year. Some stars, however, buck this trend. They shift slightly in relation to the other stars in the sky, and their paths each night do not follow the movements of anything else, including other wandering stars.

Birth and Death

It is very hard to track the wandering stars of the night sky, as they can be in different positions from night to night. However, there are a few recorded instances of the stars exploding into a bright shower of light. As the number of wandering stars appears to be roughly the same year after year, it is thought that these dying stars are replaced somehow. It is unknown what causes them to die, or how they are born.

Discovery

Loose knowledge of wandering stars has been around ever since the first person tried to map the night sky. However, credit for the discovery of this phenomenon is given to Therapontigonus Rufus, who was able to track one such wandering star for several nights and prove definitively that they were not like normal stars.
