Winter Schnee

Instead of Qrow vs Winter being a pissing contest between two man-children, have it be a demonstration to their apprentices on what they can end up being and what they have to improve on.   I think that Winter hitting Weiss for not answering correctly is one of the most bizarre instances of abuse in the show. People defend it as "tough love", but I still consider it pretty problematic. Don't get me wrong, I have two sisters and one brother and when we were younger we used to bicker a lot, sometimes resorting to hit one another, or, on the contrary, we playfully wrestled, so it's not like disagreements and physical contact were completely out of question, but there's still something that bugged me about that scene in Volume 3.   First things first, considering that Weiss' relationship with her father was already pretty distant by that time and that she was much closer to Winter, listing her academic achievements was what she considered Winter wanted to hear, so I doubt Weiss' answer stemmed from her dad's usual expectations, but from Winter's (and let's not forget Winter's constant berating of Weiss' accomplishments and stern tone of questioning). And Winter decided that the best punishment for a completely innocent mistake was to smack her little sister on the head and harshly reprimand her. Just because she used a warmer tone soon after it doesn't erase completely what she did.   But what bothered me the most was probably that Weiss didn't seem to mind at all. That's a dangerous level of adoration right there.   I'm surprised people don't talk about this more. Rummaging through some old comments, I kinda got the impression that Weiss' reaction and the tone of the next cut are the "excusing factors": Weiss not only doesn't seem to mind the slap, but also takes the previous barrage of berating extremely well, smiling and with a dreamy look on her face, making me realize that she likely thinks she deserves everything Winter throws at her. I kinda fear that, in Weiss' eyes, Winter is so amazing she can do no wrong at all, and that's not what I would consider a healthy attitude. Then there's Ruby, who pushes the bump back, giving the entire scene a weird mix of serious and comedic tones that I found inappropriate, considering both the context and the Schnee family issues.

Personal history

One of my ex-Army coworkers told me a story once about how all the soldiers in his unit would troll their superior officer when he tried to walk through their work area by moving within salute range of his path of travel one after another and saluting him so that he would have to return each salute individually as he passed, basically making him pass through a gauntlet of protocol to get anywhere.   Winter is NOT a Season Maiden, but was expected to become one. Theories about Weiss and Winter's father have claimed him as an abusive parent and a corrupt CEO, so why can't he have a sense of entitlement as well? When Winter was born, Daddy Schnee prophesied that his eldest would someday gain the legendary power, preferably if he could reap some fringe benefits. ( Alternatively, have this be a source of comfort for Willow and Jacques when Winter is born, as Jacques has not become abusive until AFTER Willow dies.)   Alternatively, Due to the popularity of The Four Maidens fairytale, there are many girls named Spring, Summer, Fall/Autumn and Winter. The fact that Summer Rose and Winter Schnee are named such don't automatically link them to those Maidens, though it does not prevent it either.
