Badge of Bystander

If you ask me, calling one of your own kinsmen a bystander sounds more rude than reassuring.
Kimnans really do have peculiar traditions. They live more in communes than in countries the way we do, yet in some ways they are even more united than us despite being scattered throughout the world. The tradition of Bystanders is one such case.   If a Kimnan speaks of themselves as merely a Bystander and wears a badge to prove, you know two things. First - they will never intervene in someone else's business, no matter how much it might go against the Bystander's belief. Second - you better respond in kind, for else all kind of disasters would fall upon your head. No idea how and why, but it seems many if not all Kimnans would soon find out about someone interfering with a Bystander's journey - and their response will not be kind.

Significance

Oh, so many theories about what being a Bystander means. A messanger, or a spy, or a special envoy. An artist or a chronicler, some sort of nobility even! If such a word could really be applied to Kimnans.   My theory is a bit different though. Most Bystanders we have records of appear to be fairly young, in their late teens or early twenties. So it is likely some sort of initiation rite, with the Badge of Bystander protecting the Kimnan youth. The first independent trip, maybe? Would make a lot of sense for a culture so intent on seeing the world. And for really old Kimnans it could be their last trip, for example. Still, hard to tell for sure.
Rarity
The real Badge of Bystander? A rare thing indeed. Most people have probably never seen it. My colleagues suggest that there are some dozens, maybe a few hundred Bystanders across the world at any given time. Hard to pinpoint the number exactly, as it appears to be more of a temporary assignment than a rank or social status.   Of course, sometimes people endeavour to forge the badges. Sometimes it even works, for a time. When a large number of fake badges appeared a few years ago, people took to intentionally provoking the would-be Bystanders, sometimes even commiting crimes in front of a Bystander to see their reaction. Caught a few pretenders, beat them up. So now it seems like Badge of Bystander became a rare sight again.

I like that you added a sense of mystery into the object and how it relates to the people that wear it.
