The Grand Web
Long overdue for some sweeping. It is truly fascinating how much attraction people find in being a member of a secret society. No matter their age or rank or status, they choose to put on cloaks with hoods and matching rings and meet together in some dark damp basement or cave. All for the fantasy of being a part of something bigger, something important. Pretend that they make decisions that can affect entire cities, regions or countries (depending on the members' level of ambition). A particularly beloved topic for play-pretend is being a local lodge of The Grand Web, the greatest and grandest secret society that has ever been or will ever be. Most major events in modern history have been claimed as orchestrated by one Grand Web lodge or another, quite often - several different lodges at the same time.
History
Of course any member of The Grand Web worth their salt will gladly tell you from memory all the centuries-long history of the order, full of intrigues and mysteries and challenges. Somehow, the stories told among different lodges end up being somewhat different stories. In fact, nothing alike in some cases. Aside from the name, of course. The first proven - that is, officially documented - mention of The Grand Web was in year 1221 (21 years ago) by a Kimnan writer named Julen de Herrera, in their book "The Traditions and Rituals of The Most Glorious Order of The Grand Web". The book itself is just one of the many written by the same author, all uncovering "unknown and mysterious aspects of our society". Or at least so the author claims, which is hard to prove as readers have yet to find a person matching the description in the author's "About Me" section. Almost as if the author is as "real" as the contents of their books...
