Troll

There are two types of trolls. There is the clan of large trolls. They live more in the cities. Then there are the small trolls who build caverns out of ice. They are the ones I am super interested in. They flourish because they are small and need fewer resources to survive. They have evolved to have a thin covering of hair on the bodies that functions like poplar bear hair. It is hollow and keeps in warmth so that they need fewer clothes. They are nomads, their ice constructs only lasting for a few days before melting away or becoming unstable in the sun. They are hunters and follow the herds of a small, rabbit-y type of deer not unlike a jackalope. They have domesticated foxes and they use these to pull small sleds and as companions. These trolls are found in small units of 5 to 10. They live to be about 150 but their breeding time is limited - usually only ten years or so. As a result, the families tend to be small. They are war like with the large trolls and fierce. They have been know to band together in clans for raids, not unlike Highlanders. They have big magic. And bigger superstitions. And a huge distrust of anyone not like them. The large trolls are more craggy and live in settlements dug into the rocks. They are the miners of the ice barrens. Because they are more settled they have food sources more or less underground. They eat specific types of vegetation that can be grown underground. They have huge eyes that have adjusted to the dark. Their eye size determines  where in the settlement they live and what jobs they are assigned. The smaller eyes trolls are able to go closer to the surface. They are vegetarians. These are the ones who need the magic glass. It provides heat and a light that the trolls can tolerate.
