Acolyte

An acolyte is a novice or trainee within a religious order who assists in the daily functions and rituals of the faith they serve. Their role can vary depending on the specific deity or religious practices they follow, but generally, an acolyte's duties include: Assisting in Religious Rituals: Acolytes help higher-ranking clerics or priests during religious ceremonies, rituals, and services. This can involve preparing sacred spaces, managing offerings, and participating in the performance of prayers, chants, or minor magical rites.   Learning Divine Lore and Magic: They are students of their faith, learning the sacred texts, prayers, and minor divine magic. Acolytes often start with the basics, like simple healing spells or blessings, and work their way up to more powerful divine magic as they advance.   Caring for the Faithful: Acolytes provide basic aid to the community, offering spiritual guidance, performing minor healings, and providing blessings to those in need. They often act as the first point of contact between the clergy and the common folk.   Maintaining Sacred Spaces: They are responsible for the upkeep of temples, shrines, or other holy places. This includes cleaning, maintaining religious artifacts, and ensuring the sanctity of these spaces is preserved.   Defending the Faith: While not primarily combatants, acolytes might be trained in basic self-defense or divine protections to guard their place of worship from desecration or to assist in warding off evil influences.   Serving as Messengers or Envoys: Acolytes can act as messengers or envoys for their religious order, delivering messages, collecting tithes, or traveling to assist other temples or communities in need.   Preparing for Higher Rank: An acolyte's service is often a period of preparation for becoming a full-fledged cleric, priest, or paladin. This involves proving their devotion, understanding of the faith, and ability to wield divine magic responsibly.
Shelter of the Faithful   As an acolyte, you command the respect of those who share your faith, and you can perform the religious ceremonies of your deity. You and your adventuring companions can expect to receive free healing and care at a temple, shrine, or other established presence of your faith, though you must provide any material components needed for spells. Those who share 1 your religion will support you (but only you) at a modest lifestyle. You might also have ties to a specific temple dedicated to your chosen deity or pantheon, and you have a residence there. This could be the temple where you used to serve, if you remain on good terms with it, or a temple where you have found a new home. While near your temple, you can call upon the priests for assistance, provided the assistance you ask for is not hazardous and you remain in good standing with your temple.
