Athlete

An athlete is a person who has dedicated themselves to the pursuit of physical excellence, often becoming renowned for their skill, strength, agility, and endurance. Unlike adventurers who seek danger, athletes focus on training and competing in various sports and contests. Their roles and activities typically include: Competing in Games and Tournaments: Athletes participate in local or regional competitions, including events like wrestling, archery, jousting, chariot racing, and other displays of physical prowess. These competitions can be important cultural events, drawing spectators and gaining the athlete fame and honor.   Training and Mastery: Much of an athlete's life is spent in rigorous training. They practice daily to enhance their abilities, learning techniques to improve their speed, strength, or endurance. This discipline makes them highly skilled in their chosen sport or activity.   Showcasing Physical Abilities: Athletes are often known for their exceptional physical feats, whether it's running incredible distances, lifting massive weights, or performing acrobatic maneuvers. They might use these abilities not just in sports, but also to help in times of need, such as in rescue operations or defense of their community.   Representing Patrons or Regions: In a D&D setting, athletes might be sponsored by nobles, guilds, or even temples, competing on their behalf. This sponsorship can bring prestige and wealth to both the athlete and their patron, and might involve wearing the patron's colors or symbols.   Entertaining and Inspiring Others: Athletes serve as entertainers and role models for the public. Their competitions can be a source of joy, inspiration, and communal pride. In some cultures, they might even be seen as heroes or champions, embodying the ideals of their society.   Pursuing Adventure or Glory: Some athletes may cross into the life of adventurers, using their physical skills in quests for glory, treasure, or to prove themselves against legendary challenges. They might seek out mythical creatures, dangerous trials, or other heroic deeds to cement their legacy.   Influencing Martial Practices: The techniques and training methods developed by athletes can influence martial practices. For instance, their conditioning methods might be adopted by warriors, or their agility training might inspire new combat maneuvers.   Participating in Rituals or Festivals: In some cultures, athletic competitions are part of religious or seasonal festivals. Athletes might compete to honor a deity, celebrate a harvest, or mark an important event, making their role culturally and spiritually significant.
Echoes of Victory   You have attracted admiration among spectators, fellow athletes, and trainers in the region that hosted your past athletic victories. When visiting any settlement within 100 miles of where you grew up, there is a 50 percent chance you can find someone there who admires you and is willing to provide information and temporary shelter.   Between adventures, you might compete in athletic events sufficient enough to maintain a comfortable lifestyle, as per the "Practicing a Profession" downtime activity in chapter 8 of the Players Handbook.
