Hermit

Hermits are individuals who have chosen a life of solitude, retreating from society to live in isolation. This choice is often driven by a desire for spiritual growth, personal reflection, or the pursuit of esoteric knowledge. Hermits dwell in remote locations such as deep forests, high mountains, or secluded caves, where they can focus on their inner journeys or specialized studies without the distractions of the outside world. Their roles and activities include: Seekers of Enlightenment: Many hermits withdraw from society to seek spiritual or philosophical enlightenment. They spend their time in meditation, prayer, or contemplation, striving to understand deeper truths about the universe, the divine, or their own existence. This pursuit can lead them to develop unique insights, mystical abilities, or a profound sense of inner peace.   Masters of Esoteric Knowledge: Some hermits devote themselves to the study of arcane, alchemical, or natural lore. They might be scholars of forgotten magic, herbalists with extensive knowledge of the natural world, or sages who have delved into ancient texts and mysteries. In their isolation, they conduct experiments, perform rituals, or write treatises on their findings.   Healers and Wise Ones: Hermits are often sought out by those in need of healing or wisdom. Despite their reclusive nature, they may possess exceptional skills in herbalism, alchemy, or divine magic, allowing them to cure ailments, brew potent potions, or offer guidance. People may travel great distances to seek their aid, viewing them as mystical healers or oracles.   Protectors of Sacred Sites: Some hermits act as guardians of sacred or ancient places, such as shrines, groves, or ruins. They are often charged with the duty of maintaining the sanctity of these sites, protecting them from desecration, and preserving their secrets. In this role, they might possess knowledge of ancient wards, rituals, or guardianship magic.   Naturalists and Survivalists: Living in seclusion requires a deep connection to and understanding of the natural world. Hermits are often skilled survivalists, adept at foraging, hunting, and living off the land. They know the local flora and fauna intimately and may have a bond with nature that grants them special abilities or insight into the wilderness.   Escaping the Past: Some hermits retreat from society to escape a troubled past, whether it's a dark secret, a tragic loss, or a period of great turmoil. Their isolation serves as a means of coping or seeking redemption. These individuals often carry the weight of their history with them, which can become a source of inner conflict or strength.   Solitary Practitioners of Magic: Hermits who are spellcasters might retreat to hone their magical abilities away from prying eyes or potential dangers. This isolation allows them to experiment with powerful or dangerous spells, commune with otherworldly entities, or seek to master disciplines that are not widely understood or accepted.   Guides and Mentors: While they live in seclusion, some hermits may take on the role of a mentor or guide to those who seek them out. They might offer wisdom, training, or insight to a worthy student or adventurer who proves themselves deserving of their knowledge or aid.   Bearers of Ancient Secrets: In their isolation, hermits may uncover or possess knowledge of ancient secrets, prophecies, or forgotten lore. This information can be crucial to the larger world, making the hermit a key figure in certain quests or storylines.
Discovery   The quiet seclusion of your extended hermitage gave you access to a unique and powerful discovery. The exact nature of this revelation depends on the nature of your seclusion. It might be a great truth about the cosmos, the deities, the powerful beings of the outer planes, or the forces of nature. It could be a site that no one else has ever seen. You might have uncovered a fact that has long been forgotten, or unearthed some relic of the past that could rewrite history. It might be information that would be damaging to the people who or consigned you to exile, and hence the reason for your return to society. Work with your DM to determine the details of your discovery and its impact on the campaign.
