Wolf, Brawny

The Brawny Wolf is the original variety of creature placed upon Cartyrion by the Goblinar deities to function as servants and companions of their Goblin children. The beasts are quite intelligent and can be easily trained to assist in hunting efforts. They can also be trained for use as mounts for Goblin warriors.

Description

Brawny Wolves are muscular, lean quadrupedal creatures. Their forepaws have four sharp claws capable of rending flesh; their hind limbs are powerful enough to permit the creature to leap as much as 10' (3m) horizontally and 5' (1.5m) vertically without breaking stride. They are also capable of great bursts of speed. Their bodies are covered with fur, which is almost always mottled in several shades of browns, though all black specimens have been reported.

The creatures also have very powerful jaws, with sharp teeth capable of tearing flesh or grappling prey. Those trained as warrior mounts will grasp and hold a target on command.

The creatures are ususally encountered living in Goblin settlements. Pups will form a strong bond with a Goblin warrior/trainer - a bond that will prevent the creature from abandoning its trainer and fleeing combat even if badly injured.

Rarely, these creatures may be encountered alone in the wild. While they will prove to be quite dangerous if attacked, such creatures are usually looking for the companionship, protection, and guidance they experienced while living with a Goblin trainer. Such creatures can be coaxed into friendship by any Adventurer who takes the right approach to the situation.

Gamemaster Notes

Brawny Wolves will typically be encountered in mounts for Goblin Warriors, or as creatures randomly roaming a Goblin settlement. In the latter case, they will not be viscious, but their curiosity could provide for interesting encounters.

A trained Goblin warrior/rider can command his Brawny Wolf mount to attack to kill, or to simply grasp and hold prey. When commanded to "fly", they are capable of short (two turn maximum) bursts of speed at double their normal rate.
