The Asylum

Today the mundane seeming of the Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum is part of the University of Mississippi Medical Center.  The main historical building has been restored and renovated for use as part of the campus.   The Asylum was in operation from 1855-1935 and at its peak had a campus of 35,000 inmates.   In 2018, a mass grave on Asylum Hill was discovered to hold an estimated 7000 bodies worth of remains.  Over 10,000 patients died while at the Asylum.  It took in all manner of patients for a variety of reasons, from social deviancy to severe insanity, short term treatments to lifelong stays.  Mental healthcare during the time it operated was primitive and underfunded.  The Asylum remains a fertile breeding ground for dark dreams and nightmares.   Chimerically, the Asylum looks much as it did during its 80 year history, complete with the marble faceplate that incorrectly states its opening year as 1851 (it actually opened in 1855, after delays caused by funding and epidemics).  It looms large, always cloaked with disturbing shadows even in the rare days of bright sunshine.    Only the main entrance and middle receiving rooms intersect the mundane.  From there the Asylum stretches out on its original floorplan, one that was eventually demolished from dilapidation and fire damage.  It has an extensive basement with a host of arcane treatments some that were actually used and some from the fanciful nightmares of what mental healthcare was like in the past.
