Marksome
Industry & Trade
Marksome's primary source of income, and its claim to fame, is the glass it produces. Made primarily from sand and wood ash, the crude glass produced by most glassmakers has a greenish tint to it. This is commonly known as forest glass. Wealthier artisans are known for making the much higher quality quartz-based and crystal glass. Both these glasses are more durable than their sand-based counterpart and are highly sought after for both alchemical purposes and for decoration, particularly to make the stained glass windows that adorn the church buildings.
The city is also well-known for making glass beads out of glass scraps, providing a much cheaper jewellery alternative for the people.
Because of the booming glass industry, the city also has ample jobs for merchants, lumber workers, quarry workers, and stone millers. There is also a citywide ash tax, which requires all residences and businesses to give up a portion of the ashes produced in their fires to the Glassmaker's Guild for distribution to the glass foundries.
Guilds and Factions
The Glassmaker's Guild is the largest guild in the city, overseeing all the foundries and ensuring that enough ash is distributed to those that require it to make forest glass. The City Cleaner's Council is a guild focused on ensuring the city looks pristine, despite the constant smoke from the glass kilns, by hiring children and unemployed persons to go around scrubbing soot from the walls of buildings and cleaning windows to a spotless shine.
Architecture
The buildings of Marksome heavily feature glass in their construction, particularly in the wealthier and business districts. Walls of buildings will be constructed almost entirely out of cut stone, wherever possible, with ceramic tile roofs. It's only in the poorer districts that the residential buildings are constructed of wood, to allow for more height and faster construction.
