Chapter 2: Slaughter in SoHo

Mickey Mahoney of The Scoop provided the party with a newspaper clipping detailing a grisly murder of an Egyptian national in SoHo.   Inspector Barrington has been hot on the trail of a series of murders in SoHo. He has been investigating the "Egyptian murders" for nearly a year. His predecessor on the case, Inspector Gregory Munden, disappeared mysteriously and has never been found. Barrington assumes that he got too close to the culprit and was assassinated; thus, Barrington dearly wants to apprehend the murderer or murderers

Plot points/Scenes

The Penhew Foundation:

The investigators followed their initial trip to The Scoop by visiting the Penhew foundation. Inside, they met with Edward Gavigan, who informed them that the Penhew Foundation began with Sir Aubrey Penhew to facilitate archaeological expeditions in Egypt. When Sir Penhew was killed during the events of the Carlyle Expedition, Gavigan took over the day-to-day operations of the Foundation.   The investigators observed the impressive displays of Egyptian artifacts, and inquired about ongoing excavations in Egypt. Lillie distracted Gavigan and the employees of the Foundation by faking a fainting spell while Bebe broke into Gavigan's office. She took a telegram detailing the ongoing expedition at Giza, before hurriedly making her escape.

Inspector Barrington:

Inspector Barrington has been investigating the “Egyptian murders” for nearly a year. His predecessor on the case, Inspector Gregory Munden, disappeared mysteriously and has never been found. Barrington assumes that he got too close to the culprit and was assassinated; thus, Barrington dearly wants to apprehend the murderer or murderers.   The group met with Barrington at New Scotland Yard. The inspector was impressed with the groups' investigations and upon mentioning their connections with Jackson Elias, he shared information concerning the murders with them.   What Barrington said about Jackson Elias:
  • Elias talked to him briefly, saying that the murders were ritual killings conducted by an organization known as the Brotherhood of the Black Pharaoh, which Elias described as an Egyptian death cult.
  • Following the tip presented by Elias, Barrington got in touch with the Penhew Foundation, an organization with connections to Egypt, to see if they could corroborate Elias’ information. Barrington met with Edward Gavigan at the Foundation, who confirmed a society calling themselves the Brotherhood of the Black Pharaoh had once existed but that they had no modern-day equivalent, as they died out hundreds of years ago. Gavigan did, however, think the method of murder imitated those of the ancient cult. Barrington also discovered that Elias had previously been in contact with Gavigan, who remarked that Elias was a sensation-seeking profiteer and unlikely to be a reliable source of information.

The Blue Pyramid Club:

The investigators traveled to the The Blue Pyramid Club. Bebe met the belly dancer, Yalesha Essam. She spoke to Bebe of the Brotherhood of the Black Pharaoh, their rituals, and that they kidnap people once a month, storing the prisoners in the club’s basement.   George met Zahra Shafik. The rest of the investigators tried tailing George but got lost. Lillie and Hezekiah went back and helped Bebe after she and Yalesha were attacked by a cultist.   They transferred Yalesha to the US. Lillie received a note from Diamond Durwood about a heist. The investigators spoke to Barrington about the Blue Pyramid Club and the cult’s activities. He asked them to keep an eye on the club, and that he would too.

Empire Spices:

After reconciling with Zahra, George went off with the rest of the investigators to meet with Diamond Durwood. Diamond, a notable fence for stolen objects, had a heist planned to retrieve Aztec artifacts at the Penhew Foundation.   After leaving Diamond's abode, they were attacked by cultists, Bebe fought them off using the gathering crowd's morale to gain notoriety throughout London. Upon returning to Empire Spices that evening, George could not find Zahra. The investigators set up a sting operation at the club.   They saw Zahra leave a meeting with the cult, throwing and breaking her black Ankh. She came clean that the investigators originally started out as a decolonization group, but has been taken over by a non-Egyptian, who seems to be making it more radical and cult-like. She agreed to travel with them to Egypt.

Casing The Penhew Foundation:

The investigators decided to case the Penhew Foundation to gather information before the heist. Lillie was able to gain access inside by convincing an unsuspecting custodian to give her access to the office phone. Bebe noticed two men in a truck pull up to the loading dock with the name "Ferris & Sons" on the side. They decided to follow the van to a rough area of town called the Limehouse Docks.

The Limehouse Docks

After dealing with a local pickpocket to gain some information, the investigators located Ferris & Sons, a shipping company that seemed to be loading crates onto a sailing ship named The Ivory Wind. Bebe hotwired one of the delivery trucks for the heist and they succeeded in escaping with it after a brief car chase.

The Penhew Foundation Heist:

The investigators broke into the Penhew Foundation, with Lillie taking a rooftop entrance. She was confronted by guards that she dispatched and took the macuahuitl and other valuables. The other investigators broke into Gavigan's office, where they discovered a secret entrance to a secret workroom, full of Mythos artifacts and correspondences.
