Forlorn Hillocks
The Forlorn Hillocks contain a multitude of rare earth metals and common ones. Tin, gold, iron and more. In 1625 miners from Greenfog attempted to settle the hills to mine these materials. Dozens of small camps, mostly comprised of individual families were formed. For three years they had relative peace save for the occasional bandits that would attack the shipping carts that headed north to Freebridge or back east to the main road. In winter 1628, a particularly brutal blizzard rolled in and blew for three strait weeks. Months passed and not a single shipment arrived from the miner camps. A group of adventurers were hired to investigate what was happening. All the adventurers found were dozens of abandoned camps, with not a single living person. They discovered a good many had frozen to death in the blizzard, but more than half were unaccounted for. They searched for three weeks in the deep snows and found nothing, they had to abandon the search and head back east to avoid yet another blizzard.
No one goes to the Hillocks anymore, not even bandits looking to pick up the mined materials that just sit there in the abandoned settlements. Upper Rendleans warn anyone who even asks about going into the hills that they will more than likely not return. Still to this day, the family members that didn't travel to the hills to mine them, place rewards that still stand on bulletin boards in town squares. In the hope that some brave or foolish soul would be willing to find their loved ones.
