Royaume noir

The Royaume noir is the kingdom and native country of the elves and gith. It is located in Fabelwelt, although it also has a colony operating in Wagakeya. Despite being officially considered a kingdom ruled by King Xiloscient, the country is actually a theocracy led by the High Priest.

Structure

The Royaume noir closely follows the ordre naturel, a natural social hierarchy among the elves. It is heavily criticized for this by some other nations, such as the Pantano Republic.

History

In 352 AD, a religious movement combined with a weak king led to the abdication of the king's role as Head of Government to the clergy, transforming the kingdom into a theocracy. Some elves view the king now as no more than a puppet to the High Priest, who could conceivably do whatever she likes with the kingdom despite having no responsibility to the people.

Demography and Population

The Royaume noir is dominated by elves, though it is home to various denizens of different races.

Territories

The Royaume noir occupies a large portion of Fabelwelt, as well as sea elf colonies in the ocean and a small colony in Wagakeya, the Colonie pleuvieuse.

Technological Level

The Royaume noir is dominated by animals with very long lifespans, and so it takes a long time for fresh blood and fresh new ideas to permeate the kingdom. While the country does keep up with the latest technological innovations of other nations, the people's fondness for the days of old has led them to apply a touch of antiquity to everything they design. However, one area that the nation absolutely excels at is magic. Many cities in the Royaume noir are home to the premier magic academies and universities, and the country is rivaled only by the Kenku colony of Corvuscopia in its contributions to the world's understanding of magic. In particular, many tomes have been written by elves on the intricacies of divine magic.

Religion

Religion assumes a higher position in daily life in the kingdom than in some other nations. The citizens of the Royaume noir are very active and explicit in their worship of the spirits. Religious gatherings are commonplace on weekends, and citizens of the kingdom often take extra care to live in a way that the gods would approve of. Because of this, extremist religious cults pop up in the kingdom fairly frequently, which is an issue the country often finds itself debating how to deal with.   Religion takes center stage in the kingdom's government, which for the last 124 years has relinquished the role of Head of Government to the kingdom's highest ranking religious official, the High Priest. Serving as an oracle, the High Priest (currently Tiaathque Othronus) guides the direction of the kingdom and heads both the legislative council and the judicial branch.

Foreign Relations

While the Royaume noir is on generally good terms with most other nations, its implementation of the ordre naturel has brought it under heavy criticism from a number of countries, most notably the Pantano Republic and the Western Collective. Some people will actively avoid doing business with the Royaume noir over their moral objections to the kingdom's practices, especially to the inhumane ways in which the kingdom treats the Gith, its poorest and most disadvantaged population. In addition, the sea elves' expansion into the ocean has put them constantly at odds with Tritons.   Despite all of this, the Royaume noir enjoys great political power on the global stage, and it is often looked at as a potential future global superpower.

Agriculture & Industry

The kingdom's dense forests make it a prime place for the agricultural industry. The Royaume noir is second only to Chawkataqua in its agricultural output across the globe. As attention has been mounting on the country's mistreatment of Gith, however, the Royaume noir has been losing more and more capital to Chawkataqua.

Education

Most elves in the kingdom tend to be quite educated, especially high elves, Eladrin, and Shadar-kai. However, education of the Gith is notoriously underfunded. Other races tend to have a level of education relating to their socio-economic class.

Priesthood

The religious leader of the Royaume noir is the High Priest, currently Tiaathque Othronus.
