Tigirgo: Sand Drift

History

Compared to the other landmasses of Wouraiya, Irewa is a glorified sand bar: hot, dry, and bereft of most forms of life. As the origin of heritage for the Keyrit Daskalarchy and the Ugo-yt Empire, its civilization and ultimate destruction are shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Thus, when warm breezes approach from the south to remind folk of past glories, it is time for grim celebration.

Eryai Retwerai descends quite rapidly towards the ocean, so the strip of beach containing sand is slim at best and in certain years nonexistent. However, to the sun kissed southern regions of the city state, where the slopes are gentler and the meadows are fresher, great dunes of sand are found. Here old couples dwell to recapture their youth, and young families travel to enjoy the world as a singular unit.

Execution

The goal is to build structures of sand, optimally tall enough to house a child or pet but usually no higher than one's knee. The sand is set aflame by powerful torches, until the sand is turned to glass. The remnant sand is washed away. These monuments are temporary. The buildings are then broken (mostly with hammers, sometimes with fists), and the pieces are scattered into the sea. Large groups that perform the ritual simultaneously commonly specialize their separate buildings: one is a post office, another a mansion, yet another is a tavern. By this way, the community comes together and acknowledges the separate roles each creator plays.

Occasionally, connoisseurs additionally create small cups by which they drink their beverage of choice. While this practice happens throughout the seasons, it is especially associated with this event. Regional tourism has made these trinkets quite popular as souvenirs. Shaken or frozen carbonated beverages can become the means by which the structures are destroyed.

Components and tools

Two elements at minimum comprise the Tigirgo: Sand and water. Over the decades, these have been changed to sand and some manner of beverage, though beverages that permanently damage the local environment (i.e, extremely acidic drinks) are typically regulated.
