Horseman of the Apocalypse (Death)

The Horseman of Death, a Lich that made a deal with Bhaal, the God of Murder, that requires him to kill. He turned Stevyn the Just into Polemos using the power of the Ring of Winter to corrupt and bribe him. A real thorn in our side, we have pissed him off quite a bit.
We first encountered him aboard The Hunter when he came after the Skull Chalice of Ch'gakare alongside the Draconta.

After meeting Dreali, the group is informed that Thanatos (previously a wizard named Trumanor) seeks power through death. He became a lich as his way to cheat death, trying to balance the scales of death to appease Bhaal while growing his own power. Thanatos likes to have rivals as a way to challenge his own abilities. He has taken leadership of an assassin guild called the Shades made up of cultists that tried to bring a city from the Shadow Plane to destroy Faerun at some point. He does not want to destroy the Material Plane, just sow lots of chaos and death.

Thanatos's lair resides in the Shadow Plane. His phylactery is that of a broken heart in the form of a necklace; "two pieces of the halves must be reunited" in order to destroy it. One of the pieces is safe in a heavily warded chest in the possession of the Silver Tongues, the location of which he does not know so long as the wards remain. The other half is sealed away on the Plane of Shadows in a Shadow Vault.
