Island of Calidus

I traveled for days on foot through Calidus, the Island of the Ancients, and arrived at its most sacred place: the Forest of Fire. The road that I followed went from dry and sandy to swampy and then rocky and mountainous. As I continued my journey eastward, large trees began to appear around me that were taller than any trees I had ever seen before, and glowed orange in the night sky. Lush vegetation was everywhere, with vines hanging from all sides. The ground beneath my feet changed from dirt to moss covered soil.   The ground sloped upwards as the road led me further into the forest. Massive trees loomed high above me towering over everything else in sight, all bound in flames and yet unharmed by the fire’s raging heat. And then finally, I saw it — the Temple of Calidus.   — Master Garr

Geography

The island of Calidus, the most geographically diverse continent with grassy plains, inland swamps, a spectacular crater waterfall, and a flaming forest. The Island of Calidus runs predominantly west to east and features several different geographic regions.   At its westernmost point is a gem traders' camp. This area of coast is dry and is mostly sandy and beachy.   As one tracks eastward inland, one begins to encounter savannah grass followed by a marshy swamp known as the Valley of the Watchers. This marshy swamp features towering karsts that rise upwards from the thick green swamp below.   The eastern portion of the island is rocky and mountainous. The most interesting geographic feature on this side of the island is a large crater, which has formed a dramatic waterfall that falls into an inland lake below.   Pressing further east one finds a swamp with watery groves and treacherous glades. These brush up against the Inlet Mountain Ranges, crowned by Crater Lake to the north. Here the water spills down into Shelter Bay below, a sheltered cove where   Immediately to the east on the other side of the Inlet Mountain Ranges lies the Forest of Fire and within its ever-burning flames the Temple of Calidus. The Forest of Fire is named for a natural phenomenon that causes the land to burn at all times. It was once home to many different tribes but now only one remains, called the Calidusians.   The easternmost region of Calidus receives the least rain and is a windswept salt flat known as the Spirit Flats. A lone trading post exists on its easternmost shore. Beware if you are heading into the Spirit Flats, as impassible mountain ranges prevent access to most sources of water, and the fierce salt winds can be a threat to even the most seasoned traveler.   Along Calidus's southern shore are several small islands and inlets that serve as safe ports and shelters for ships during storms. About two-thirds of the way across the southern shore lies the entrance to Shelter Bay, separating the swamps and marshes in the west from the Forest of Fire in the east.   The forest itself encompasses the Temple of Calidus in its center and stretches as far north and south from there as it does from east to west.
