The Fortress of Todmorden
The Fortress of Todmorden was built with the explicit purpose of surviving siege from any angle. Although it is currently enjoying an era of peace, it used to be a very hotly contested area due to its central location and access to ocean trade via the The Silverloch. Culturally, there is a gruffness and a brusque feeling to those that live here. Many are militia or former military, and still others remember well the horrors of war. However, despite this brash exterior is a people who know the worth of simply being alive and are grateful for that.
The city itself is surrounded by heavily fortified walls, and flanked with defensive towers. It has several outlying farms and villages, but the bulk of businesses and residences lie within the border.
Demographics
Todmorden is a fairly mixed society, although some of the more uncommon beast races such as Aarakocra or Kenku are few and far between.
Government
Todmorden was once solely a military fortress, and as such still operates in a rather military fashion. The General in question is also the King, Cuthbert Kinhurst. Most infrastructure is built in order to support both the defenses of the fortress, and also the self-sufficiency.
Industry & Trade
The Silverloch is an excellent source of freshwater fish, due to its incredible depth and overall size. The fishing industry in Todmorden is one of its most profitable ones, although curiously their most popular (and expensive) export is a small fish native only to Lake Morden, to the south. This fish, the Morden Fry, is said to be most delicious either raw or cooked. However, due to its size, it is difficult to get in satisfying quantities. The government of Todmorden have incredibly strict rules regarding who is allowed to fish on Lake Morden, when, and for how long. Transgressors often face up to weeks in jail.
Assets
The Garden of Todmorden
One such business is a unique underground garden which flourishes using the help of magical lights, nutrient-infused waters, and the care of several magically-inclined individuals. This garden, a curiosity or a secret to the rest of the world, is Todmorden's secret to being able to survive siege. The city is fully self-reliant, capable of hunkering down to outlast their enemies quite easily.
