The Sunken City of Prome
Prome was once a proud city in the south of The Kingdom of Neromenes. Despite its arid location, it was a fairly large settlement, and built both out and up to accommodate its citizens and their slaves.
It was the labor of these enslaved people which produced the immense and well-constructed buildings and ziggurats that Prome was known for. Their work lasted for hundreds of years, until an earthquake opened up sinkholes throughout the city, which crumbled.
In the century since Prome met its end, countless adventurers have attempted to plumb its depths for its renowned wealth, and most have failed. However, who knows what lies beneath the surface of those shifting sands?
Demographics
Prome was a primarily human city, aside from its majority-orc slave population, and several other outliers.
Government
Prome was most recently ruled by a Pharaoh by the name of Bas Dhodra, the usurper king. He was said to be a cruel and ruthless person, with no greater love than gold.
Industry & Trade
Having little to no natural resources of their own, Prome prospered instead by the exploitation of labor.
For many years, Prome and Sommersea were the premier locations for Wyrmwuld's now-illegal slave trade. Prome's navy would kidnap orcs from nearby Bha Khadgir to sell, and would ship them worldwide via Sommersea's port. Kidnapping was not the extent of their economy, however, as Prome also bred their own slaves, primarily humans, and sold those as well.
History
Prome was a prosperous and flourishing city, thanks to its prolific slave trade providing both export and labor. After the slave trade was banned by the King of Neromenes, Prome was forced to go underground - quite literally.
Beneath the sand, the Promeneans dug extensive thoroughfares beneath their great city, where they could breed, imprison, and traffic slaves. As time went on, and the desert sun seemed to be increasing in intensity, they began to move their own residences and amenities underground as well.
Then, circa the year 2300, disaster struck. A massive sinkhole, and several smaller ones around it, swallowed the city within a matter of minutes. Whether this was due to an existing pocket of air beneath the city - or because of the Promenean's excavations rendering the sandstone unstable - is unknown. Regardless, the devastation of the city was all-encompassing, as the ground beneath even otherwise-untouched buildings shifted and brought them to collapse. Those who didn't perish in the landslide or end up trapped beneath the rubble fled to nearby cities, and Prome was abandoned.
