Hullbreaker Crabs
Colonies of Hullbreaker Crabs can be found throughout the shallows off the coast of Wyrring. Named after their unusual hunting style, these scavengers are around 4 inches in diameter. At first look, they appear like any other crab, however on closer inspection, a large, soft airsack can be spotted on their underside. These airsacks contain a plethora of oxygen-producing bacteria, which part of the crabs diet goes directly to. Their shells are typically plain-coloured, such as to help them blend in with the sandy bottom.
Working together, a colony of Hullbreakers use this sack to produce a large air bubble which they cover over with a thin layer of sand. When a large target passes overhead, such as a whale, they burst this bubble, causing a large capitation. They rely upon their strong shells to survive the extreme pressure change; however, their prey is typically not as lucky. There have been several cases where Hullbreakers have mistaken ships passing overhead as prey, and have caused significant damage. As such, sailors are always warned to watch for tell-tale streams of bubbles which leak from their large air pockets.
