Mimicrow

A species of birds which lives in the canopy of Sylvia, it is very rare to see a Mimicrow, however, it is extremely common to hear them. Those that have been lucky enough to see them have described them as a small bird covered in dark green feathers. This natural camouflage and their diminutive size provide most of their protection from predators.

Mimicrow are most famous for their "birdsong". Unlike other birds with one particular tune, they have the ability the accurately repeat and remember sounds they have heard. They have a very good memory for sounds, and it is said that each bird knows more than 1000 sounds. These sounds have been known to include songs, words, and other noises. Mimicrows teach their young some of these noises, which allows them to be passed from generation to generation.   These birds are also very playful and enjoy practical jokes. These range from sneaking up behind each other and other animals and imitating a large predator, to distracting them so they can swoop in and steal some food.   The Sylvia elves have a special relationship with mimicrows. They are very popular pets amongst the Northern Sylvia Elves, who teach them songs so as to have them repeat it all day. As well, outdoor breakfasts, taken around dawn, are very popular, as you are serenaded by the sounds of mimicrow vocal warm-ups. It is said that Sylvia first thing in the morning sounds like a hundred singers practicing.   The Southern Sylvia Elves see them as a far more practical tool. Because certain sounds are passed from generation to generation, the southern elves have attributed these sounds to specific colonies of mimicrow, who typically reside in specific areas. One of the first things young elves learn is which sounds correspond to which area, which serves as a supplementary form of navigation. However, because of this reliance, it is forbidden to make any of these navigation sounds to any mimicrow, in case it starts to repeat it. Teaching these sounds to others is typically done in abandoned animal dens.
