Penrose Theory of Magic
Originally theorized and popularized by a Magister several centuries ago, the Penrose Theory of Magic posits that the source of magic is not some element of the material plane, but instead is drawn power from other planes in the multiverse. What we know as magic is merely a controlled result of opening minor gateways to other planes causing the power of that plane to cause a tangible effect in the world.
Many mages have an issue with this theorem, as it suggests that all magic is essentially Evocation, and many view it with suspicion as Penrose was an expert in Evocation spells. This theory is taught in the later years of study at The Grand College, and typically leads to some amount of animosity between students of the Evocation field and those of other fields.
