Julian Yelta Flynn III

Duke of Attica

Born to an elderly Human father and Sylf mother approaching her late years, Julian is a man driven by impulse. He often blames it on his mother giving him that flicker of Fae hedonism, but there's a reason his father married her despite the outcry from the family. Alas, his parents didn't survive for much of his life, as they died shortly after he was born, leaving his servants to raise and care for him. They loved him - he was a sweet child - but they never really treated him like family. He was always their lord. The closest things to parents he had were his nurse and butler. His nurse was 16 when he was born, feeding and caring for him as best she could. His butler was always at the ready, and the two servants did a lot to teach him how to behave and how to be a man. Still, Julian will never let it be said that he was a damper on the party regardless of whether or not he's being "debaucherous" or "unlordly".   Beyond that, he is actually a very capable ruler, presiding over his family's lands as Duke with grace and wisdom. Though he does pale in comparison to Gilbert and Enoch - some of the few people he can truly call "friend" - when it comes to recognition from the crown, he also is roughly ten years their junior, giving him plenty of time to rise to their acclaim.

Personal history

Julian was raised as a child in dire need of love and attention. With his parents dead before he reached age one, and his extended family shunning him due to their not endorsing his father's marriage to his mother, Julian was alone much of his life. He had his servants, but they tended to distance themselves from him, as he was their Lord, and that was not a relationship to muddy. However, his nurse and butler couldn't help themselves.   His nurse was truly a surrogate mother, feeding him from her own breast until he was weaned. That alone would have been enough to make her feel something for the child, but his having lost his parents only made her more devoted to raising the boy like he were her child. Even to this day, she never married, remaining at Julian's side as his confidante and friend. Julian learned much of what it meant to be a caring and gentle person from her, shaping much of the man he is.   His butler, likewise, found it difficult to remain emotionally distant. Though a relatively young servant - only 20 - when Julian became Lord of the House, he was promoted to butler, making him one of the two closest to the young Duke-to-be. In retrospect, this was likely due to the extended family snatching up the older, more experienced help when the Duke perished, but he didn't let that stop him from being a devoted servant to Julian. If the nurse was Julian's mother, then his butler was truly a father figure, teaching him the finer points of being a gentleman.   Those relationships shaped Julian to a very deep part of himself, as they not only taught him how to behave, but also broke down the wall that many nobles have between themselves and their servants. This is what caused Julian to obliterate the wall, entirely, allowing his servants to live in the main part of the Manor with him, rather than their traditionally assigned quarters. Likewise, he paid them wages in addition to simply letting them live in his home and eat his food. This was seen as odd by many of his fellow nobles, and downright disgraceful by others, but he didn't let it bother him in the least.   As for his life-of-the-party attitude, it belies the deeper loneliness that he feels. Though he has made the need for condescension non-existent, there is still an ever-so-thin barrier between Lord and servant; employer and employee. Not to mention the fact that, despite their roles in his life, his butler and maid refused to accept the titles of being his parents. They believed that it would dishonor the memory of Julian's real parents. This has led him to seek attention and love from other sources to fill the void of family that he has. He has found some true friends in EnochGilbert, and Angel, but has yet to find a wife. It may be that his hedonistic behavior - something that has earned him a reputation as a philanderer at court - has kept the more dedicated women at bay, but the reasons are immaterial; he's lonely.

Education

Like the vast majority of his compatriots, his noble birth afforded him access to the best tutors money could get, giving him a rich education in history, language, economics, and even swordplay. Most vital to his role, and possibly most interesting to him aside from fencing, was government. The inner workings of governmental systems from all over Wyrth fascinated Julian, and led him to deeper study of the aristocracy, monarchy, and the diplomatic web he had become a part of.
