Drow City States

Around 1200 b.U. the last elven settlements in the east disappeared. Many speculated that they fled into the Underdark like the dwarfes before them. Unknown to many the exodus started much earlier as more and more elves followed the promises Lolth offered them. The first houses that colonized the world underneath became the leading families while those who fled their surface enemies found themselves at the bottom of the hierarchy - with those rejecting Lolth finding themselves enslaved.

Overall not much is known about what exactly happened or what the current status is. It is clear that the elves were changed, as they have a dark grey skintone and predominently red eyes. Based on the accounts from Drow who made it to the surface this change in appearance was a blessing of Lolth to adjust her followers to their life underground.

Lolth is the supreme power for these elves and her church is her right hand in ruling them. The society is a matriarchy, with a clear limitation how influential a male can ever rise. While regular female elves might end up as soldiers, the noble families will send their daughters to the clerigy expecting to become priestess of the Spider Queen. Males on the other hand mostly serve as soldiers, sons of the nobility will be send to the military school or if talented enough to the school of mages. While top tier fighters are valuable, they will never gain the influence the lowest priestess will have. Mages on the other hand are rare which gives them some additional status, but even them know that they have to be careful around priestess.

The drow society seems to have spread successfully in the Underdark, built on slavery and demonic support. Lolth provides her followers with Haradim's and Ka'ash's demons as allies. Contrary to surface elves it seems as they have a much higher birth rate and are thriving. Its unclear how many cities they established as each city stands on her own.

Based on Lolth's teaching the structure of each city is the same. The houses are officially ranked by power, with the matrons of the strongest eight establishing the ruling council. Lolth's rules are the foundation of the society - a society based on paranioa, infighting, brutality and utter devotion to the goddess.
