Norse Kindred

Ásatrú is a modern religion that revives, reconstructs, and reimagines the ancient polytheism of Northern Europe.

Religion

The modern belief in the Norse gods is not a direct continuation of the beliefs of the Vikings. It is more of a revival and reinterpretation of the old religion, as there are so few written sources on the subject.
The believers in the old Nordic religion revive the Vikings’ beliefs from myths handed down via written sources, primarily the works of poetry known as the Elder and Younger Edda. As no overall interpretation of the written sources exists, the religion is practiced so that it gives the best meaning to the individual.
To feel the power of their ancestors, the believers in the old Nordic religion go to pre-Christian cult sites, where they make offerings. The chosen location may be a Bronze Age burial mound or a Viking Age ship setting, for instance.

Mythology & Lore

Deities venerated in Ásatrú include Odin, Thor, and Freya, but respect is paid to a large number of figures.

Divine Origins

The word Ásatrú is modern Icelandic for “Æsir Faith” and refers to belief in the major tribe of Norse deities. Practitioners often self-identify as Heathens

Tenets of Faith

Blót is the central ritual of Ásatrú. The Old Norse word for “sacrifice” is used for a rite in which offerings are made to gods, goddesses, land spirits, and departed people of importance.
