Yonder Basics

This is a list of random things your character would know. I might add to this as I continue making the world.   Politics: It's standard D&D feudalism. The kingdom of Helier is made up of three main regions, formerly kingdoms in their own right: The lands of Heron, Lion, and Deer. These regions are led by dukes or duchesses, and divided into further provinces, which are led by barons or baronesses. The Aburaga Valley province is set in the land of Deer. The Queen of Helier, Queen Oracle Harmonia I, lives in Heartcage in the Land of Lion.   Religion: Religion in Yonder is mostly a mix of polytheism and animism. Everything has a spirit, from the smallest bug to the greatest forest to the gods themselves. When someone or something dies, their spirits move on to the next world, called the Shade. Big enough spirits (like the gods) can still sway and influence events in the land of the living, with each god holding dominion over different aspects of life.   Example Gods:
  • The Lion - Maasimha - oversees honorable warfare and symbolizes courage
  • The Heron - Agamicus - oversees the air and symbolizes rebirth and purity
  • The Ram - Balnaim - oversees farming and earth and symbolizes stubborness or unshakeable ideals
  • The Frog - Keknau - oversees rain and poison and symbolizes transformation
  • The Elephant - Gajamoth - oversees lightning and earthquakes and symbolizes disasters
  • The Deer - Rubheara - oversees forests and travel and symbolizes empathy
Feel free to make up your own! Most people worship all the gods for different things.   Of course some people believe that their chosen gods never died and are merely hiding or perhaps sleeping. They think they can make them return by performing acts in their name and they remember that the gods of old liked a good sacrifice......   Landmarks throughout the Kingdom of Helier:
  • Mirror Mountains - A mountain range where certain sides shine like glass, giving the appearance of vast mirrors. To the west of the Aburaga Valley.
  • Tongikan Forest - Vast temperate rainforest that stretches up and down the western coast. Rumors abound of dead gods that haven't been mined of their meat yet, but none have been found so far.
  • The Backbone - Vast river that flows down most of Helier to the southern coast. An offshoot feeds into the Scaled River which flows through the Aburaga Valley.
Current Events known throughout the Kingdom of Helier:
  • The island of Croel is currently at war with the Kingdom of Ghazkeyl, rumored to be over a trade dispute. Much of the war is currently fought at sea.
  • The Duke of Heron has recently died and his daughter, the new Duchess, is seeking suitors.
  • There is a rebellion happening in the nearby Barony of Dog, with the rebels being outnumbered, but using ancient magics and guerilla tactics to hold their own. Rumored to be over succession.
Magic in Yonder: While people revere the gods, they view the civilizations of godeaters that came afterwards as a cautionary tale of mortal greed. Small kingdoms would spring up around the gods' corpses almost overnight, with whoever ate the most godmeat declaring themselves king of the fledgling nation, only for that kingdom to be destroyed from within or by the next fledgling nation shortly thereafter. While these civilizations were able to accomplish amazing things, most civilizations never lasted more than a few decades at most due to the chaos of so many high-level characters in the world. This led the people of Yonder to have a distrust of magic and the chaos that comes with it, especially in more rural areas. While innate racial spells are seen as an everyday part of life, anything more than that can lead to distrustful glances at least and death or exile at most in some communities.
