Blazing Owl

The Blazing Owl is a large bird species found all across the Hell Zone. When standing, they are approximately 1m tall with a wingspan of 2.5m.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Blazing Owls are large round birds with bright red and orange feathers. Its wings are a darker red, with small sparks flying off of all of its feathers. The bird has two very long tufts of fire above its yellow eyes. It has a bunch of long feathers on its head, almost looking like the bird has hair. They have 3 sharp claws on their two feet, used to dig into and grip onto its prey.

Genetics and Reproduction

Blazing Owls lay 3 or 4 eggs every so often. During mating season, they will lay only 2. The babies hatch after 4 weeks of nesting. The owls create nests out of different materials, and they use materials that keep in heat, so the eggs can stay warm while the parents go get food.

Growth Rate & Stages

When the chicks hatch, they are a golden colour. They reach adulthood at about 3 months old, and during this time period they lose their golden feathers and grow new, red ones.

Dietary Needs and Habits

These birds will scavenge on every dead carcass they can find. If they cannot find any carcasses, they will attack small creatures and eat those. They have incredibly strong stomach acids, they are able to digest bones, and every other part of a carcass.

Behaviour

These owls are very vicious. When confronted by a predator, they will squawk at the top of their lungs, use their claws to scratch at the animal and beat them with its wings. Blazing Owls are very friendly with others of their species, engaging in conversation with others using their own language of squawks and screams. Their calls echo across the cavernous biome and can be heard almost a kilometre away.
Geographic Distribution

Fire Witch Familiar

The Fire Witch that lived in the Southwell Towers owned a blazing owl as her familiar. This blazing owl was bigger than normal, and most unusually the feathers were purple and the fire was a deep blue. No other blazing owl has ever been recorded with those colour schemes, as they are normally reds, oranges and yellows.
