Orra

Orra, or the Shining City, is a large city found somewhere in one of the few habitable pockets of Temperil. The million year old settlement has rapidly decreased in population in recent years, as the Forever Storm steadily grows stronger, scaring temperilians off the planet. Orra stands strong, its defences increasing as the storm worsens.

Population

Size & Sprawl

Much of Orra's population is quite condensed. The city doesn't stretch far, instead reaching upwards into the sky, wrapping tightly around the Bismuth Mountain, a tall, thin, artificial tower made completely out of bismuth, a beautifully shimmering metal. The city extends 3,950 metres from the ground upwards, sectioned into five districts.

Inhabitants

A 1929 census reported 179,020 individuals living in the city. 93.6% of the population temperilians. The only other major sophont species in Orra are ourins and cilvarthians; populations of both migrated several hundred years ago, and lost the ability to leave the planet.

87% of people who currently live in Orra were born in the city, as well as their parents, and grandparents.

Sophonts Population %
Temperilian 167,562 93.6
Ourin 8,772 4.9
Cilvarthian 2,686 1.5
Total 179,020 100

Districts

Landan

One of three districts forming the Ground Floor of Orra. Landan has a population of 43,103, making it the most popuated district.

Linc

Linc has a population of around 7,000. Linc has the highest number of ourins, and is the most culturally diverse district.

Birmas

The smallest district in the Ground Floor, Birmas has just three thousand citizens. It functions as the industrial district.

Edian

Edian sits at the very top of the city, held up by extensive infrastructure. The local and planetary councils can be found in Edian.

Leves

Leves serves as the trade hub of Orra. With many direct connections to other large cities and settlements, trade becomes easy.

Stav

Stav and Leves form the Middle Floor of Orra. An isolated district, many of its citizens rebel against the rules of the rest of the city.

Layout & Geography

The city's six districts stack on top of each other, to form a large pyramidal shape. The Ground Floor consists of three districts, Landa, Linc, and Birmas. The First Floor is made of Leves and , while Edian sits at the very top of the city.

Orra sits atop a small rocky plateau overlooking the Korras Ocean to the south, bordering the Magnic Mountains in the North and East.

Bismuth Mountain

Simply referred to as the Bismuth Mountain, this artificial megastructure holds up the entire city and deters the Forever Storm. Made up of 50% bismuth and a number of other strong metals, this metal alloy is reinforced with archomancy, an Urban Magic field related to architecture. As an element, bismuth seemingly repels the Forever Storm. Nobody is quite sure why.

Landmarks & Monuments

Planetary Base

The Temperil Space Legion's Planetary Base can be found in Edian, at the very top of the city. This base is home to all five Head Legionals.

Magitech Research Hub

Scientists of all walks of life gather in the Magitech Research Hub to put forward their knowledge into combining magic and technology to defend themselves against the Forever Storm.

Trode Museum

A museum storing hundreds of trode bear-related artifacts. Some include claws, fur fragments, fossils and coprolites, and much more.

Leves Tram Station

Leves Tram Station has direct routes to seven other major cities and almost thirty smaller settlements around the area. Its trams and tram lines are made of bismuth and gold.

Nice! May Orra last a million more before the Forever Storm catches up to it.   What made the other sophonts lose their ability to leave the planet? :o Was it the storm?

It was mostly the storm, but re-reading the article now, I have no idea what I meant by that xD I might have to do some re-thinking and re-writing on that lol

What a striking looking city. Sounds like it could be a hard place to live, though, like much of Temperil.

Ah, what a tricky place to live! I'm curious about bismuth and how the industry works with so few citizens. I wonder if there is any hierarchy in the magitech research hub, or if they're all equally valued there, towards the goal of figuring out how to survive against this horrible storm?   I love this idea for a city and would love to read some short stories connected with it.   Lovely work :)

I like the wonderfully inspiring build up to the sky. But I would like to know what significance the Bismuth Mountain has for the Temperilians?

The concept of this city is epic! I love the pyramid shape and how it is sectioned vertically instead of horizontally. It gives me cyberpunk vibes.
