Ancestries of Shenn

Many humanoid ancestries populate the lands of Yore and its immediate neighbours. Common human ancestries include Arkadians (Lost Lands of Akados), Barcellans (Kingdom of Yore), Yorish (Freedlands), Rashani (Borderlands), Nehwonese (Lankhmar*), and Ulfheimers (Nyster and Ulfheim), increasingly mixed and spread throughout the central regions; less common are Xin (Xiatian), Nurians (Nuria Natal), Qadiri (Sundered Kingdoms), Doreshi (Dragon Coast and Morgau), and (rarely) Vasileans of the wyvern-riding city states, and mammoth-riding imperialist Letherites.   Nonhuman civilisations common to Yore include the Khazad (Ironcrag Cantoners, Trollheimers, Duergar, and Skyseekers – see entry below Elves – Moon Elves (Qualinesti), Wild Elves (Kagonesti), and Dark Elves (Drow Kender (Nystrian and Rothenian Centaurs; Tabaxi; Tortles; Derro; Gnomes (Nysteri, Margryn and Svirfneblin Grimlocks; Goblinkin (Bugbears, Hobgoblins, and Goblins Orcs (Urzin and Akrin), and Amlakan Gnolls.   Apart from the Wind Elves (see entry below), other Elven ancestries include the Shadow Fey and Sun Elves, but apart from a few rare individuals these are generally found in other planes of existence. The same applies for Genasi, Aasimar and Tieflings. Rarely, Kenku can be encountered in Amarthaur, but generally their populations are found in Kara-Tur, and to a less extent in Xiatian and Neizhong.   A small pocket of Kobolds can be found in the Free City of Zobeck, but otherwise these creatures are native to Drakonia. Similarly, the Amlakan Gnolls and Flinds are far more widespread in Nuria and Ku-Amlaka, but isolated tribes exist in the Akados Wilderness and on the Dragon Coast.   But beyond the lands of Old Yore, many more civilisations abide… some more civil than others! There are tales of Grippli and malicious Fey. Other races, such as Darklings, infiltrate existing societies. And many uncivilised, semi-intelligent races roam the lands, such as Troglodytes, Ogres and Trolls. Then of course, there are the more-or-less organised denizens of other planes of existence, unknown to the inhabitants of Shenn – the Slaadi, Tsathar, Genies, Gith, Yugoloths, and Fiends.     Aarakokra   An insular society of birdmen somewhere in the peaks of the Stoneheart Mountains.   Apshanti   An ancient lost race of tritons, originating from Lost Azlent. Rumours tell of a submerged city somewhere off the coast of Amarthaur.   Darakhul of Doresh   Between Morgau and the Dragon Coast, the decimated lands that were once the River Kingdoms of Doresh now lie largely bleak and empty, for below them is the sprawling Ghoul Imperium, a vast underground empire ruled by Nicoforus the Pale. With Doresh now virtually emptied of food, the hungry undead are looking for new prey.   Drakonians   A militant and hierarchical society of Dragonborn, Lizardfolk and Kobolds, far to the east. It is thought live under the reign of metallic and imperial dragons and worship Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon.   Firbolgs   Peaceful druids of the Rashan Coast (the Borderland seaboard south of Endholme and north of the busy trading cities of the Khmar Bay in Nuria Natal).   Giants   Many breeds of Giant can be found in Mithral Mountains and the Giant Marches, the Icespires and the Crown of the World above Trollheim.   Goliaths   A spiritual, animist culture native to the Jokul Straits and northern lands of Lether. To the imperial Letherites, they are barbaric raiders who need to be culled.   Illithids   The Mind Flayer civilisation of Ilthe-Ba’Manza lies above the Sunless Sea, far below the Galentaur Forest.   Kuo-Toa   An aggressive race of frog people spread throughout the islands and shorelines of the Rashan Coast.   Merfolk   A secretive and peaceful civilisation beneath the Nurian Sea and Gasping Ocean. Sworn enemies of the Sahuagin.   Minotaurs   Baphomet’s Chosen Ones, native to the Isle of Mithas, the Minotaurs are an intolerant and isolated species with a sophisticated society and brutal rites.   Myconids   The farmers of the Underdark, the Myconids are a telepathic species that feed the denizens of the Cylopean Deeps beneath the Galentaur Forest. They are key to the Underdark’s ecosystem, being relied upon by the Grimlocks of Garzh-Nesh, the Svirfneblin of the Neblinhala, the Drow of Arach-Lluth, the Duergar of Nidlhammer, and even the insane Derro, as well as the Moon Elves of the giant sinkhole of Qualimor.   Ranzong Gnolls   The Gnolls of the Blazing Valleys are native to the hills of western Xiatian. Unlike their Amarthaurian cousins of Ku-Amlaka, they are a gentle and nomadic race of scholars, who live in colourful and resplendent tent cities.   Sahuagin   Terrors of the Gasping Ocean, the Sahuagin are a fierce and warlike race who patrol the ocean depths.   Skyseeker Dwarfs   An eagle-riding race of Dwarfs who live high in the Nurian Range of the Stonehearts. It is said they commune (or even live side by side) with Cloud Dragons, although few believe Dragons still exist on the continent of Amarthaur.   The Feytouched   Changeling communities are rumoured to dwell in the ancient forests of Vasilea.   The Kariv   A travelling ancestry of humans, skilled in divination magic and found throughout Yore, but more widely upon the steppe of the Rothenian Plains.   Thri-kreen   A secretive and little understood insectoid race who wander the Badlands of deepest Nuria and Ku-Umlaka.   Treants (Ents)   These arboreal beings tend to the great forests of Yore – the Galentaur and Bor Nyster. Only the Old Margreve is devoid of these entities, for the enchanted forest has a mind and will of its own.   Vampires of Morgau   Morgau, the Bloodless Kingdom, ruled by the Vampire Lord Lucan, was once one of the thriving River Kingdoms. Now it is an horrific society run by vampiric piratical slavers.   Werecreatures   Werebears: A simple race of woodsmen from Nystera.   Werelions: Some say Werelions have infiltrated some of the most powerful factions and organisations of the coastal trade cities of Nuria Natal.   Wererats: Rumours abound in Zobeck that the so-called Mouse King of the Black Network is in fact a lycanthrope.   Werewolves: Predatory packs are found in pockets of Rothenia, the Vale of Sighs, and the Forlorne Dales.   Wind Elves   A noble but savage race of Genasi Elves, with Elemental blood running in their veins. Some are sultans of the desert-cities of Al-Amlak, allies of the Red Wizards of the Wasted West.   Yuan-ti   These scheming Serpentfolk are native to the Jungles of Udhult, and are worshipped as gods by some human city states of Tlatoca.       Note: Although Yore is technically the modern kingdom whose capital is Bard’s Gate, and which incorporates the Principality of Reme and is paid tribute by the Borderland Provinces, Old Yore in the days of the Khorian Empire used to encompass the entire region, from Morgau to Nuria Natal to the Sundered Kingdoms. Because most inhabitants of the area are little travelled, however, the term “Yore” is used to refer to all the known lands in common parlance, for that is the extent of many people’s limited knowledge of the world.     *Lankhmar is an independent city state, like Zobeck. It lies just south of the Borderland Provinces, southwest of Tyr.
