The Kagonesti

The Wild Elves, or Kagonesti in Qualilambe, split from their common ancestors with the The Qualinesti (or Moon Elves, who call themselves High Elves) more than six millenia ago, long after the Passage of the Silvanesti (Sun Elves) and Lantawathesti (Shadow Elves), but before the Fall of the Balenuinesti (Dark Elves).   These Wild Elves, also known as Wood Elves, made their home in the vast boreal forest of Bor Nyster, whilst their cousins the Moon Elves retreated into the Galentaur, where they inhabited a network of caves and ravines, and the huge meteor hole known as the Morgrod. While the Moon Elves dabbled in arcane sorceries and communed with the Shadow Elves, the Wild Elves rejected all but druidic magic and lived in harmony with the forest.   They organise themselves tribally, each tribe having a shamanic or priestly chieftain who participates in the Council of the Forest. An elected Consul known as the Kagonestri presides over the Council, and a Speaker of the Forest is chosen from each major tribe in turn to articulate the will of the gods. Currently Uslektil is Consul, and Shuluvia, Priestess of the Blue Phoenix, is Speaker.   For millennia the Kagonesti lived in simple abodes spread sparsely through the forest. Whilst they gathered for tribal ceremonies and celebrations, they lived largely in independent family units. However, after a series of bloody encroachments by organised hobgoblins, orcs and giants, and conflict with the woodsmen of nearby Wolfheim Vikings, they built a long palisade in a large, natural clearing within a hidden vale known as the Valley of Perfect Silences. There many of the Wood Elves settled, naming their home Kagonost.   Influenced by their closest allies – the Forest Kender of the Shadow Fells and nomadic Plains Kender of Rothenia (Halflings), as well as the fierce Rothenian centaurs, Nysteri Gnomes and tabaxi from the Eastern Wilds – the Wood Elves, under the perpetual threat of violent incursions by their enemies, learnt to mine and smelt metals and to forge metallic weapons and armour.   Thus they defended themselves, but at a price, for many of their kind saw the founding of a city and the use of metal as a kind of blasphemy against Nature, and so they exiled themselves from Kagonost and grew apart, becoming wilder and more savage versions of their peace-loving kin.   These savage Elves are known as Wilderlings or Avarwaith – ‘Those Who Refused’. They are even more secretive than the Kagonesti, and far more easily disposed to violence. Whilst not overtly hostile to their cousins, they are nevertheless treated with suspicion and somewhat nervously respected, and certainly feared by the Kender and Wolfheimers of the western fringes, and the goblins and trolls of the eastern uplands.   The Kagonesti traditionally worship Pan and Silvanus, but within Kagonost are temples to the newer cults of Sarenrae, Desna and Selune. They have little contact with the Qualinesti, being cut off by the forbidding Icespire Mountains, and are distrustful of the Dwarfs that make their homes in Trollheim to the North. However, they are a curious people and offer a circumspect welcome to the few travellers that pass through their forest in peace.
