Ye Gods!
Pantheons of Yore
I, Grendelf the Wanderer, have travelled these lands of Yore for many decades, and have encountered on my way a great many peoples, all beholden to their own gods and spirits. I have endeavoured to compile a list of these entities, but know that it is far from exhaustive, and some of the names herein are merely alternative names for the same divine being. For the names are not the gods, but merely names. They are expressions of the limited understanding of mortals for things that are essentially ineffable and unknowable. That being said, I have found it convenient to divide these beings into four broad categories. The first are the various aspects of The Great Mother, who is largely worshipped by more primitive cultures of the north and west, from Rothenia to the Shadow Fells. Then there are the Elder Gods, who were more numerous in the Khorian Era, and withdrew from the affairs of mortals before the modern era, approximately 2,000 years after Arcane Magic was tamed by the Wizards of Old Nuria and the Demon Lords were banished to the Abyss. These Elder Gods are largely forgotten now, but pockets of worship still exist in farflung places and secret sects, especially in the deserts of Nuria Natal. Next I have catalogued the Ascendant Gods, whose arising from the souls of mortal heroes and antiheroes marked the beginning of the Nurian Age. Whilst dedicated temples and churches to these gods exist, many with their own priesthoods, it is more usual for the people of Yore to worship and invoke different gods at different times, depending on their need. It is likely that some, such as Silvanus and Pan, and merely masks of the same entity, worshipped by Elves and Humans respectively. I have not distinguished between the gods of Humans, Elves and Dwarfs, for I have found similar deities in all cultures, although Gruumsh of the Orcs seems to stand apart without equivalent. In some parts, even in the lands of Men, I have found certain gods to be more prevalent, or seen as superior, where in other locales they remain unheard of or relegated to esoteric cults. Geb, for example, is widely worshipped in the agricultural south, but posit his name to villagers in the wilder northern regions of Yore, and you will be met with blank incomprehension. Not without hesitation, but for the sake of completeness, I have compiled a list of the Demon Lords, who were spawned in the Abyss, and who came to Yore to corrupt the hearts of mortals and feed upon their baser instincts. They were flung back to the Outer Planes by the self-sacrifice of the Elder Gods and Devils, and nowadays are venerated only by monstrous tribes, or by occult groups who meet in the lonely wildernesses, or in the dark of secret cellars and sewers. There are rumours that amongst these vile demonic Lords were powers far older and more alien, who arrived not from the Abyss but from forgotten realms beyond the stars, but those few names I have encountered I dare not record here, for fear of drawing their strange and maddening eyes back upon these already ravaged and disputed lands. The baleful schemes of the Demon Lords are already quite enough for Mortals to be dealing with. Finally, I record the Immortals; those lesser deities, devils, demons and spirits who have had influence upon the mortal realm since history began. Venerated by some, and spurned by others, it is unclear exactly how these beings came into existence. Surely, they are of this material plane, and do not belong to the Outer Sphere as do the gods true, and they take distinct forms - of witches, giants and genies - and can be encountered directly by mortals, yet they seem to be somehow beyond death themselves. For certain, my list is incomplete, for I have still to journey to every corner of the world, and there are exotic continents, such as Tian Xia, that lie beyond the Gasping Ocean and south of Nuria, and even out beyond the wasted west and further north than the desolate tundra of Trollheim, of which I know next to nought, all with their own pantheons and beliefs. It may also be that, with the inevitable confusions of different languages and cultures, I might have misplaced or miscategorised some of these beings, or merged or separated them unwittingly, and for sure there are many that I have simply missed or which have remained deliberately nebulous. Still, I humbly offer to you this imperfect and incomplete catalogue, dear reader, and caution you to fear these names and keep them sacred, for they belong to beings whose scope and power is far beyond the blinkered minds of mortals. The Great Mother
