The Bellehop Disk

The Bellehop Disk is an invention of the Bellehop International Postal Association which was designed to supplement the Bellehop Instant Delivery Network by allowing direct delivery of mail to its intended recipient. The current iteration of the device is a palm-sized disk that is roughly two inches thick, with a spiral-close mechanism on the top that opens to allow direct access to a Bellehop Delivery Station. The device is also adorned with a number of runes that enhance this functionality, such as creating an audible sound upon receipt of mail.

History

When the Bellehop Courier Service was established in 5E 147, the D'Nalsi Islands were a sparsely populated region of the world. What had once been one of the largest empires in history was now little more than a backwater territory. Despite still operating as an "independent" empire, the D'Nalsi Empire lacked any real power, and functioned more like a vassal state of the Elican Union than any truly independent power. As a result, the Bellehop Service only needed to establish three Delivery Stations, all located on Lachmeda, the archipelago's main island. Very little civilization existed on the other islands, and those who chose to live there did so with the understanding that they were of comparatively low importance when it came to mail.   As the D'Nalsi Empire grew in prominence, the Bellehop Service struggled to keep pace. By the end of the Fifth Era, the population of the island chain had grown exponentially, with the outer islands seeing the largest growth. The Bellehoppers, the couriers of the Bellehop Service, were able to partially address the issue, but they were also quickly becoming overwhelmed. To compensate, the Bellehop Service contracted over a dozen artificers to find ways to simplify the mail delivery process. The primary aim of this initiative was to streamline the construction of Delivery Stations, though the Bellehop Board of Directors was more than willing to hear out any other ideas the artificers may have developed during the initiative.   Lughaidh Steel-Shaper, one of the contracted artificers, was the first to realize the problem with the initiative's primary goal. Even if new Delivery Stations could be built quicker, the problem would only shift to being a personnel issue, as Bellehop currently lacked an adequate number of Bellehoppers to staff these new locations. Rather than increasing the number of Delivery Stations, Bellehop needed to invent a way to remove the restrictions placed on the system by having static locations. His invention was a small box that could be installed inside homes that allowed for immediate transportation of mail from a Delivery Station to the recipient.
